Staple cartridge comprising a power management circuit
A staple cartridge comprising a power management circuit is disclosed.
1. A surgical stapling system, comprising:
a stapling instrument, comprising:
a shaft;
a power supply circuit extending through said shaft, wherein said power supply circuit comprises a power supply antenna; and
a jaw; and
a staple cartridge seatable in said jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:
a cartridge body;
staples removably stored in said cartridge body;
a power management circuit comprising a charge accumulator and a power transfer antenna, wherein said power transfer antenna is aligned with said power supply antenna to receive power from said stapling instrument when said staple cartridge is seated in said jaw, and wherein said power supply circuit is capable of supplying a maximum current to said power management circuit; and
a sensor circuit in communication with said power management circuit which is capable of drawing a sensor supply current from said power management circuit, wherein said power management circuit is configured to supply additional power from said charge accumulator when said sensor supply current is larger than said maximum current.
2. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said stapling instrument further comprises a second jaw, wherein said sensor circuit comprises a sensor configured to sense a parameter of patient tissue positioned between said staple cartridge and said second jaw.
3. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said stapling instrument further comprises a handle, and wherein said shaft extends from said handle.
4. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said stapling instrument further comprises a housing configured to be attached to a robotic surgical system, and wherein said shaft extends from said housing.
5. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said charge accumulator is configured to hold a maximum charge, wherein said power management circuit comprises a processor and a signal antenna, and wherein said processor is configured to emit a decrease signal to said stapling instrument via said signal antenna to reduce the current in said power supply circuit when said charge accumulator has reached said maximum charge.
6. The surgical stapling system of claim 5 , wherein stapling instrument comprises a control system configured to reduce the current in said power supply circuit when said stapling instrument receives said decrease signal such that the current in said power supply circuit matches a lower current being drawn by said sensor circuit.
7. The surgical stapling system of claim 6 , wherein said processor is configured to emit an increase signal to said stapling instrument via said signal antenna to increase the current in said power supply circuit when the charge of said charge accumulator falls below a minimum charge threshold.
8. The surgical stapling system of claim 7 , wherein said control system is configured to increase the current in said power supply circuit to said maximum current when said stapling instrument receives said increase signal.
9. The surgical stapling system of claim 5 , wherein stapling instrument comprises a control system configured to reduce the current in said power supply circuit by 50% when said stapling instrument receives said decrease signal.
10. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said charge accumulator is configured to hold a maximum charge, wherein said power management circuit comprises a processor and a signal antenna, and wherein said processor is configured to emit a signal to said stapling instrument via said signal antenna to stop the current in said power supply circuit when said charge accumulator has reached said maximum charge.
