Abstract

A surgical instrument including a power assist device, and its method of use for deploying surgical fasteners, is disclosed. The surgical instrument may include a handle, an elongated shaft extending from the handle, and a surgical fastener deployment system including a driveshaft. The driveshaft is actuatable between at least a first proximal position and a second distal position. A striker is movable relative to the driveshaft and an impact surface is associated with the driveshaft. The impact surface is constructed and arranged to be struck by the striker member to displace the driveshaft to the second distal position and deploy the surgical fastener.

Claims (29)

1. A method for deploying a surgical fastener, the method comprising:

distally displacing a second portion of a fastener deployment system to distally displace a first portion of the fastener deployment system;

distally displacing a driveshaft from a first proximal position to a second distal position in response to the distal displacement of the first portion of the fastener deployment system to deploy the surgical fastener; and

rotating a first handle portion of a handle of a surgical instrument relative to a second handle portion of the handle, wherein rotating the first handle portion relative to the second handle portion rotates the first portion of the fastener deployment system relative to the second portion of the fastener deployment system, wherein the first portion of the fastener deployment system is disposed at least partially in the first handle portion and the second portion of the fastener deployment system is disposed at least partially in the second handle portion, and wherein distally displacing the second portion of the fastener deployment system includes distally displacing a shuttle rotatably coupled to the driveshaft.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing energy when the driveshaft is displaced from the first proximal position towards the second distal position.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein distally displacing the driveshaft compresses an energy storage member within an energy storage member housing to store the energy.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising releasing the stored energy when the driveshaft is at a predetermined position between the first proximal position and the second distal position to accelerate the driveshaft.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein releasing the stored energy includes accelerating a striker with the stored energy.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising striking an impact surface associated with the driveshaft with the striker.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising selectively preventing distal movement of the striker until the driveshaft is at the predetermined position.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the impact surface and the striker are rotationally fixed relative to each other and the first handle portion.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein a rotational housing is disposed at least partially in both the first and second handle portions, wherein the striker, and the impact surface are positioned at least partially within and rotationally fixed relative to the rotational housing, and wherein the rotational housing is rotationally fixed relative to the first handle portion.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising rotating the rotational housing relative to the second handle portion.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the shuttle is rotatably coupled with a proximal portion of an energy storage member housing.

12. A method for deploying a surgical fastener, the method comprising:

rotating a first handle portion of a handle of a surgical instrument around a first axis relative to a second handle portion of the handle;

displacing a second portion of a fastener deployment system distally to displace a first portion of the fastener deployment system to displace a driveshaft of the fastener deployment system from a first proximal position towards a second distal position;

storing energy as the driveshaft is displaced from the first proximal position towards the second distal position;

releasing the stored energy to accelerate a striker with the stored energy;

striking an impact surface associated with the driveshaft with the striker to accelerate the driveshaft towards the second distal position; and

rotating the first portion of the fastener deployment system relative to the second portion of the fastener deployment system when the first handle portion is rotated relative to the second handle portion.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein distally displacing the driveshaft compresses an energy storage member within an energy storage member housing to store the energy.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising releasing the stored energy when the driveshaft is at a predetermined position between the first proximal position and the second distal position to accelerate the driveshaft.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising selectively preventing distal movement of the striker until the driveshaft is at the predetermined position.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein displacing the second portion of the fastener deployment system includes displacing a shuttle rotatably coupled to the driveshaft.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein a distal portion of the shuttle is rotatably coupled with a proximal portion of an energy storage member housing.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the impact surface and the striker are rotationally fixed relative to each other and the first handle portion.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein a rotational housing is disposed at least partially in both the first and second handle portions, wherein the striker, and the impact surface are positioned at least partially within and rotationally fixed relative to the rotational housing, and wherein the rotational housing is rotationally fixed relative to the first handle portion.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising rotating the rotational housing relative to the second handle portion.
