Abstract

Golf clubs and golf club heads having a weight member that is configurable in multiple positions to alter the performance characteristics of the golf club head are presented. In some examples, the weight member may be arranged in a sole of the golf club head and may include ends having different weighting characteristics. For instance, one end may be heavier or denser than another end of the weight member. The difference in weight characteristics may be due to different materials used to form the different ends, different construction of the ends, and the like. The position of the weight member may be adjusted to alter the performance characteristics of the golf club head. For instance, the weight member may be removed and rotated to position a heavier end where a lighter end was previously positioned.

Claims (59)

1. A golf club head, comprising:

a golf club head body having a front, a rear, a crown, a sole, a toe, a heel; and a recess formed in the sole,

wherein the sole is angled such that it forms an upward incline in a front to rear direction;

wherein the front comprises a striking surface;

the recess forming a recess surface on the sole,

wherein the recess surface is depressed from the sole toward the crown of the golf club head body,

the recess extending in a front to rear direction along the sole of the golf club head body;

wherein the recess comprises a major longitudinal axis extending generally in a front to rear direction;

wherein the recess comprises of a first end and a second end;

wherein the major longitudinal axis is skewed, such that the recess is angled with respect to a striking surface longitudinal axis that is generally transverse to the striking surface;

wherein the recess further comprises a first notch located at the first end and a second notch located at the second end;

an adjustable weight member configured to be received entirely in the recess, such that no portion of the adjustable weight member extends beyond a perimeter of the recess,

the adjustable weight member consisting of a first end and a second end,

wherein the first end and the second end of the weight member define an oval shape,

wherein the adjustable weight member extends from the first end of the recess to the second end of the recess when received in the recess,

wherein the adjustable weight member is also angled with respect to the striking surface longitudinal axis,

wherein the first end of the adjustable weight member having a visual appearance different than the second end of the adjustable weight member,

wherein the adjustable weight member consists of two configurations:

an initial configuration in which the first end of the adjustable weight member is adjacent the first end of the recess, and

a flipped configuration in which the first end of the adjustable weight member is adjacent the second end of the recess;

wherein the first end of the recess has a first bottom surface having a first aperture and the second end of the recess has a second bottom surface having a second aperture,

wherein the adjustable weight member comprises a first material and a second material,

wherein either the first end of the adjustable weight member or the second end of the adjustable weight member is comprised of the first material and the other of the first end and the second end is comprised of the second material, and

wherein the first material has a higher density than the second material.

2. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein, the first end of the recess comprises a first width and the second end comprises a second width.

3. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein each of the first aperture and the second aperture include threads and are configured to receive a threaded fastener.

4. The golf club head of claim 2 , wherein the first width and the second width of the recess are connected by a center portion having a third width.

5. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the major longitudinal axis of the recess is angled toward the heel in the front to rear direction relative to the striking surface longitudinal axis.

6. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the weight member comprises a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the bottom surface is oriented toward the crown of the golf club head with the adjustable weight member is received in the recess,

wherein when the adjustable weight member is received in the recess, the top surface of the adjustable weight member is offset towards the crown of the golf club head via the first notch and the second notch in reference to a surface of the sole surrounding the recess, such that the adjustable weight member makes minimal or no contact with the ground during use.

7. A golf club head, comprising:

a golf club head body having a front, a rear, a crown, a sole, a toe, a heel; and a recess formed in the sole,

wherein the sole is angled such that it forms an upward incline in a front to rear direction;

wherein the front comprises a striking surface;

the recess forming a recess surface on the sole,

wherein the recess surface is depressed from the sole toward the crown of the golf club head body,

the recess extending in a front to rear direction along the sole of the golf club head body;

wherein the recess comprises a major longitudinal axis extending generally in a front to rear direction;

wherein the recess comprises of a first end and a second end;

wherein the major longitudinal axis is skewed, such that the recess is angled with respect to a striking surface longitudinal axis that is generally transverse to the striking surface;

wherein the major longitudinal axis of the recess is angled toward the heel in the front to rear direction;

wherein the recess further comprises a first notch located at the first end and a second notch located at the second end;

and

an adjustable weight member configured to be received entirely in the recess, such that no portion of the adjustable weight member extends beyond a perimeter of the recess,

the adjustable weight member consisting of a first end and a second end,

wherein the first end and the second end of the weight member define an oval shape,

wherein the adjustable weight member extends from the first end of the recess to the second end of the recess when received in the recess,

wherein the adjustable weight member is also angled with respect to the striking surface longitudinal axis,

wherein the adjustable weight member comprises a first fastener at the first end and a second fastener at the second end;

wherein the first fastener and the second fastener comprise different weights;

wherein the adjustable weight member consists of two configurations:

an initial configuration in which the first end of the adjustable weight member is adjacent the first end of the recess, and

a flipped configuration in which the first end of the adjustable weight member is adjacent the second end of the recess;

wherein the adjustable weight member comprises a first material and a second material,

wherein either the first end of the adjustable weight member of the second end of the adjustable weight member is comprised of the first material and the other of the first end and the second end is comprised of the second material, and

wherein the first material has a higher density than the second material.

8. The golf club head of claim 7 , wherein the first fastener and the second fastener are threaded and configured to removably attach the adjustable weight member to the golf club head body.
