Abstract

The heating array includes first heating elements arranged in an elongated array, the first heating elements spanning from a first end to a second end of the elongated array, a midsection of each one of the first heating elements bowing concentrically outward from a radial centerline running longitudinally through the first end and the second end, the first heating elements being configured to flex concentrically inward when a hoop force is applied to sides of the elongated array.

Claims (36)

1. A heating array, comprising:

first heating elements arranged in an elongated array, the first heating elements spanning from a first end to a second end of the elongated array, a midsection of each one of the first heating elements bowing concentrically outward from a radial centerline running longitudinally through the first end and the second end, the first heating elements being configured to flex concentrically inward when a hoop force is applied to sides of the elongated array.

2. The heating array of claim 1 , further comprising:

a collar on the first end, the first heating elements being electrically connected to the collar.

3. The heating array of claim 1 , further comprising:

a linking element on the second end, the first heating elements being electrically and mechanically connected to each other via the linking element.

4. The heating array of claim 3 , wherein the first heating elements are equally spaced apart from each other along the linking element.

5. The heating array of claim 1 , further comprising:

a pin extending between the first end and the second end, the first heating elements being electrically and mechanically connected to each of the first heating elements on the second end via the pin.

6. The heating array of claim 5 , wherein the pin is positioned along the radial centerline.

7. The heating array of claim 5 , wherein the pin is electrically conductive, each of the first heating elements being electrically connected to each other in parallel via the pin.

8. The heating array of claim 5 , wherein the pin is made from a first material that is different than a second material for the first heating elements, the second material experiencing a higher temperature than the first material when an electrical current flows through the pin and the first heating elements.

9. The heating array of claim 5 , wherein the pin is made from a first material that is different than a second material for the first heating elements, the first material having a first electrical resistance that is between 5% and 10% that of a second electrical resistance for the second material.

10. The heating array of claim 5 , further comprising:

a collar on the first end, the first heating elements being electrically connected to the collar.

11. The heating array of claim 10 , further comprising;

a first voltage source connected to the pin; and

a second voltage source connected to the collar.

12. The heating array of claim 1 , wherein the second end of the elongated array is configured to be inserted into a cavity of a substrate to heat and at least partially vaporize the substrate.

13. The heating array of claim 1 , further comprising:

a tubular frame, the elongated array being at least partially contained within the tubular frame.

14. The heating array of claim 13 , wherein the tubular frame is configured to accept a cylindrically-shaped substrate while allowing the second end of the elongated array to be inserted into a tubular cavity of the cylindrically-shaped substrate, the elongated array being configured to heat and at least partially vaporize the cylindrically-shaped substrate.

15. The heating array of claim 14 , further comprising:

second heating elements on an interior of the tubular frame, the second heating elements being configured to heat and at least partially vaporize the cylindrically-shaped substrate.

16. A system, comprising:

a substrate; and

the heating array of claim 1 , the second end of the elongated array being selectively insertable into a tubular cavity of the substrate to heat and at least partially vaporize the substrate.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the heating array further comprises:

a tubular frame, the elongated array being at least partially contained within the tubular frame.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the substrate is a cylindrically-shaped substrate, the cylindrically-shaped substrate being selectively insertable into the tubular frame as the elongated array is selectively insertable into the tubular cavity.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the heating array further comprises:

second heating elements on an interior of the tubular frame, the second heating element being configured to heat and at least partially vaporize the cylindrically-shaped substrate.

20. The system of claim 16 , wherein at least a portion of the first heating elements are configured to maintain contact with an interior surface of the tubular cavity, as the interior surface applies the hoop force to the sides of the elongated array, when the second end of the elongated array is inserted into the tubular cavity.

21. The system of claim 16 , wherein the heating array further comprises:

a first voltage source electrically connected to the first end of the elongated array, and

a second voltage source electrically connected to the second end of the elongated array.
