Abstract

A device includes a charge controller to regulate a battery output voltage based on an input voltage and an input current received from a charging circuit. A loop controller monitors the input voltage and the input current to generate a feedback signal to adjust the input voltage to the charge controller.

Claims (25)

1. A device adapted to be wirelessly coupled to a charging circuit, the device comprising:

a regulation switch having first and second switch terminals and a control terminal, wherein the first switch terminal is adapted to be wirelessly coupled to the charging circuit, and the second switch terminal is adapted to be coupled to a battery;

a charge controller having a controller output coupled to the control terminal, the charge controller configured to control the regulation switch to regulate a battery output voltage responsive to an input current and the battery output voltage, wherein the charge controller includes a current sense amplifier to monitor current and provide a current sense output, and a voltage sense amplifier to monitor voltage and provide a voltage sense output, in which the current sense output and the voltage sense output are connected in a wired-OR configuration; and

a loop controller having a feedback output adapted to be wirelessly coupled to the charging circuit, wherein the loop controller is configured to monitor an input voltage and the input current to generate a feedback signal at the feedback output.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the loop controller is a first loop controller, the device further comprising a second loop controller is configured to regulate the input current.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the feedback signal is a first feedback signal, the device further comprising a second feedback signal that is generated by the second loop controller and configured to be provided to the charging circuit to facilitate regulation of the battery output voltage.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the charging circuit is configured to execute a control algorithm to process the first feedback signal and the second feedback signal to adjust the input voltage to the charge controller.

5. The device of claim 2 , wherein the second loop controller is configured to control a die temperature of the regulation switch.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the charge controller is configured to control the regulation switch to regulate the battery output voltage based on the input current, the battery output voltage and a reference voltage.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the reference voltage is based on a charging reference signal, a pre-charging reference signal, or a thermal-charging reference signal.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the loop controller further comprises an analog-to-digital converter to supply the reference voltage.

9. The device of claim 1 , the charging circuit further comprising a transmitter circuit and a receiver circuit that inductively couples energy to the charge controller and the loop controller.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the transmitter circuit executes a PID (proportional-integral-derivative) algorithm to control voltages and currents responsive to the feedback signal.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the current sense amplifier utilizes the input current as a reference and compares the reference to a charging reference signal, a pre-charging reference signal, or a thermal-charging reference signal to control the regulation switch.

12. A device having first and second device inputs adapted to be wirelessly coupled to a charging circuit and configured to receive, respectively, an input voltage and an input current, the device comprising:

a battery output adapted to be coupled to a battery;

a regulation switch having first and second switch terminals and a control terminal, wherein the regulation switch is coupled to the first device input, and the second switch terminal is coupled to a device output for providing a charging voltage and a charging current;

a charge controller having a charge input coupled to the second switch terminal, and a charge output coupled to the control terminal of the regulation switch for controlling the regulation switch to regulate the charging voltage based on the input voltage, the input current, the charging voltage and a reference voltage, wherein the charge controller includes a current sense amplifier to monitor current and provide a current sense output, and a voltage sense amplifier to monitor voltage and provide a voltage sense output, in which the current sense output and the voltage sense output are connected in a wired-OR configuration; and

a loop controller having a first loop input coupled to the first device input, a second loop input coupled to the second device input, and a feedback output adapted to be wirelessly coupled to the charging circuit.

13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the reference voltage is based on a charging reference signal, a pre-charging reference signal, or a thermal-charging reference signal.

14. The device of claim 12 , wherein the charging circuit is configured to execute a control algorithm to adjust the input voltage responsive to the feedback output.

15. The device of claim 12 , the charging circuit further comprising a transmitter circuit and a receiver circuit that inductively couples energy to the device.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the transmitter circuit executes a PID (proportional-integral-derivative) algorithm to control the input voltage and the input current responsive to the feedback output.

17. The device of claim 12 , wherein the charge controller is configured to control the regulation switch to regulate the charging current in response to the input current exceeding a current limit threshold.

18. The device of claim 12 , wherein the charging circuit is configured to change the input voltage responsive to the feedback output.
