Abstract

In an embodiment, an augmented reality display is provided that incorporates a prescription lens for the wearer. In an embodiment, an image is generated from a display and directed into the edge of the prescription lens, and the lens acts as a waveguide. The image is internally reflected within the prescription lens, and is directed to the wearer by an image combiner embedded within the prescription lens. In an embodiment, the augmented reality display can be adjusted for many common vision problems including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

Claims (40)

1. An augmented reality display, comprising:

a lens attached to a frame;

an electronic display capable of producing a first image that is directed into the lens so that the first image is internally reflected by a surface of the lens; and

an image combiner within the lens that is positioned to reflect the first image to a wearer, and combine the first image with a second image transmitted through the lens and the image combiner,

wherein a portion of the lens is coated with a neutral density filter such that, a first part of the second image that does not pass through the image combiner passes through the neutral density filter, and a second part of the second image that does pass through the image combiner does not pass through the neutral density filter.

2. The augmented reality display of claim 1 , wherein:

the lens is adapted to an eyeglass prescription of the wearer; and

a surface of the image combiner is adapted to the eyeglass prescription of the wearer.

3. The augmented reality display of claim 1 , wherein the first image is directed from the electronic display and into the lens via a beam shaping lens and an in-coupling prism.

4. The augmented reality display of claim 1 , wherein the frame is an eyeglass frame, a monocular frame, a binocular frame, a telescope frame, a microscope eyepiece, or a range finder frame.

5. The augmented reality display of claim 1 , wherein the electronic display is coupled to a linear servo mechanism that moves the electronic display to change the focal distance of the first image.

6. The augmented reality display of claim 1 , wherein the electronic display is an organic light-emitting diode display or a backlit light valve technology film.

7. The augmented reality display of claim 1 , wherein the electronic display is substantially flat and produces a foveated image when viewed by the wearer.

8. The augmented reality display of claim 1 , wherein:

the electronic display has a uniform resolution; and

a pixel density distribution of a foveated image is optically produced at least in part by the image combiner.

9. The augmented reality display of claim 1 , wherein image data provided to the electronic display represents an image with a non-uniform resolution corresponding to a pixel density distribution of a foveated image.

10. The augmented reality display of claim 1 , wherein:

the lens includes two parts; and

the combiner is positioned at an interface between the two parts.

11. An article, comprising:

a lens with an internal image combiner,

wherein the internal image combiner is positioned such that a first image injected into an edge of the lens and reflected internally by a surface of the lens at least once, is reflected by the image combiner and combined with a second image transmitted through a surface of the lens to the exterior of the lens, and

wherein a portion of the lens is coated with a neutral density filter such that, a first part of the second image that does not pass through the image combiner passes through the neutral density filter, and a second part of the second image that does pass through the image combiner does not pass through the neutral density filter.

12. The article of claim 11 , wherein the lens is a non-planar lens.

13. The article of claim 12 , wherein the lens is a prescription eyeglass lens.

14. The article of claim 11 , wherein the surface of the image combiner is a positive power image combiner.

15. The article of claim 11 , wherein the surface of the image combiner is characterized by an extended polynomial equation that includes conic aspherical surfaces and extended polynomial terms.

16. The article of claim 11 , wherein the lens comprises an upper part and a lower part bonded by an adhesive.

17. The article of claim 11 , wherein:

the lens has a front surface and a back surface;

the lens is divided into a first lens portion and a second lens portion by the image combiner;

the front surface of the first lens portion is coated with the neutral density filter; and

the back surface of the second lens portion is coated with the neutral density filter.

18. The article of claim 17 , wherein the neutral density filter is a 30% neutral density coating applied to a surface of the lens.

19. The article of claim 17 , wherein:

the back surface of the first lens portion is coated with an anti-reflective coating; and

the front surface of the second lens portion is coated with the anti-reflective coating.

20. The article of claim 11 , wherein after the first image is reflected by the image combiner, an angular resolution at the center of the first image is higher than an angular resolution at an edge of the first image.

21. The article of claim 11 , wherein the first image is viewable as a foveated display by a wearer after the first image is reflected by the image combiner.
