Abstract

The invention relates to a modular humeral prosthesis for an inverse shoulder prosthesis, comprising an anatomical shaft ( 1 ) and a separable epiphyseal head ( 2 ) which may be angularly orientated by rotation about the longitudinal axis (XX) of the anatomical shaft. The anatomical shaft and the epiphyseal head comprise complementary angular indexing means ( 11, 28 ) for relative rotational fixation.

Claims (32)

1. A method for implanting into a shoulder of a patient a modular humeral prosthesis which comprises an anatomical stem and an epiphyseal head, the method comprising the steps of:

using a gauge to measure retroversion angle of the shoulder to determine a desired angle of rotation to couple the epiphyseal head relative to the anatomical stem;

implanting the anatomical stem into a humerus of the patient;

attaching the epiphyseal head to the anatomical stem at the desired angle of rotation based on the measured retroversion angle, the anatomical stem and the epiphyseal head having complimentary mating surfaces, one of the mating surfaces having a peg extending therefrom and the other of the mating surfaces having a plurality of recesses for receiving the peg, each of the recesses corresponding to a predetermined angle of rotation of the epiphyseal head relative to the anatomical stem, immobilizing the epiphyseal head in rotation with respect to the anatomical stem at the desired angle of rotation by fitting the peg into an appropriate one of the recesses corresponding to the desired angle of rotation; and

locking the epiphyseal head to the anatomical stem via a screw passing through the epiphyseal head into the anatomical stem,

wherein the mating surface of the epiphyseal head is perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the anatomical stem and extends laterally beyond the mating surface of the anatomical stem regardless of the angular orientation of the epiphyseal head with respect to the anatomical stem.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mating surface that comprises a plurality of recesses further comprises markings associated with respective recesses of the plurality of recesses, the markings being indicative of options for the desired angle of rotation.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the markings are provided in degrees of rotation.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical stem further comprises a flared metaphyseal portion.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when implanted, a proximal surface of the anatomical stem and a distal surface of the epiphyseal head are located inside the humerus.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising mating a cup to the epiphyseal head.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical stem comprises at least one longitudinal rib for rotational locking.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising producing an axial hole in the humerus of the patient adapted to receive the anatomical stem and the epiphyseal head.

9. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the epiphyseal head comprises a lug that extends from a distal surface of the epiphyseal head, and

wherein the lug is at least partially disposed within a stem hole of the anatomical stem when the epiphyseal head and the anatomical stem are assembled.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein at least a portion of the stem hole is threaded.

11. A method for implanting into a shoulder of a patient a modular humeral prosthesis which comprises an anatomical stem and an epiphyseal head, the method comprising the steps of:

determining a retroversion angle of the shoulder to achieve a desired angle of rotation of the epiphyseal head relative to the anatomical stem;

implanting the anatomical stem into a humerus of the patient;

attaching the epiphyseal head to the anatomical stem at the desired angle of rotation, the anatomical stem and the epiphyseal head having complimentary mating surfaces, one of the mating surfaces having a peg extending therefrom and the other of the mating surfaces having a plurality of recesses for receiving the peg, each of the recesses corresponding to a predetermined angle of rotation of the epiphyseal head relative to the anatomical stem, immobilizing the epiphyseal head in rotation with respect to the anatomical stem at the desired angle of rotation by fitting the peg into an appropriate one of the recesses corresponding to the desired angle of rotation; and

locking the epiphyseal head to the anatomical stem via a screw passing through the epiphyseal head into the anatomical stem,

wherein the epiphyseal head comprises a bowl for receiving a cup of a reverse shoulder prosthesis, and

wherein the mating surface of the epiphyseal head is perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the anatomical stem and extends laterally beyond the mating surface of the anatomical stem regardless of the angular orientation of the epiphyseal head with respect to the anatomical stem.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the screw passes through a head hole in the epiphyseal head such that a head of the screw is disposed entirely within the head hole of the epiphyseal head and a threaded portion of the screw is disposed within the anatomical stem.

13. A method for implanting into a shoulder of a patient a modular humeral prosthesis which comprises an anatomical stem and an epiphyseal head, the method comprising the steps of:

determining a retroversion angle of the shoulder to achieve a desired angle of rotation of the epiphyseal head relative to the anatomical stem;

implanting the anatomical stem into a humerus of the patient;

attaching the epiphyseal head to the anatomical stem at the desired angle of rotation, the anatomical stem and the epiphyseal head having complimentary mating surfaces, the mating surface of the anatomical stem having a peg extending therefrom and the mating surface of the epiphyseal head having a plurality of recesses for receiving the peg, each of the recesses corresponding to a predetermined angle of rotation of the epiphyseal head relative to the anatomical stem, immobilizing the epiphyseal head in rotation with respect to the anatomical stem at the desired angle of rotation by fitting the peg into an appropriate one of the recesses corresponding to the desired angle of rotation; and

locking the epiphyseal head to the anatomical stem via a screw passing through the epiphyseal head into the anatomical stem;

wherein the mating surface of the epiphyseal head is perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the anatomical stem and extends laterally beyond the mating surface of the anatomical stem regardless of the angular orientation of the epiphyseal head with respect to the anatomical stem.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the mating surface of the anatomical stem is planar.
