Abstract

A vehicle includes a traction battery having a plurality of cells arranged in arrays and grouped into a plurality of cooling zones. A thermal management system includes a plurality of distinct circuits each associated with one of the zones. The thermal management system is configured to provide individual heating or cooling to each of the circuits to independently control temperatures of the zones. A controller is programmed to, in response to one of the zones exceeding a first threshold temperature and another of the zones being less a second threshold temperature, command the thermal management system to provide cooling to the circuit associated with the one of the zones and command the thermal management system to provide heating to the circuit associated with the another of the zones.

Claims (35)

1. A vehicle comprising:

a traction battery including a plurality of cells arranged in arrays and grouped into a plurality of cooling zones;

a thermal management system including a plurality of distinct circuits each associated with one of the zones, wherein the thermal management system is configured to provide individual heating or cooling to each of the circuits to independently control temperatures of the zones; and

a controller programmed to, in response to one of the zones exceeding a first threshold temperature and another of the zones being less than a second threshold temperature at a same time, simultaneously command the thermal management system to provide (i) cooling to the circuit associated with the one of the zones and (ii) heating to the circuit associated with the another of the zones.

2. The vehicle of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of temperatures sensors each associated with one of the zones and configured to output a signal indicative of a temperature of the associated zone.

3. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein each of the circuits includes a valve, and wherein the controller is further programmed to, in response to all of the zones exceeding the first threshold, (i) rank the zones hottest to coldest based on temperature and (ii) command the valves such that a flow rate of coolant through the circuit associated with the hottest zone is the highest and such that a flow rate of coolant through the circuit associated with the coldest zone is the lowest.

4. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the circuits include conduit configured to circulate a liquid coolant therethrough.

5. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the circuits extend through the traction battery.

6. A vehicle comprising:

a traction battery including a plurality of cells arranged in arrays and grouped into a plurality of cooling zones;

a thermal management system including:

a plurality of distinct circuits each associated with one of the zones, wherein the thermal management system is configured to provide individual heating or cooling to each of the circuits to independently control temperatures of the zones,

a heating loop,

a cooling loop, and

a plurality of valves each associated with one of the circuits and each valve having a first inlet connected to the heating loop, a second inlet connected to the cooling loop, and an outlet connected to the associated circuit; and

a controller programmed to, in response to one of the zones exceeding a first threshold temperature and another of the zones being less than a second threshold temperature, (i) command the thermal management system to provide cooling to the circuit associated with the one of the zones and, simultaneously, (ii) command the thermal management system to provide heating to the circuit associated with the another of the zones.

7. The vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the cooling loop includes a heat exchanger and the heating loop includes an electric heater.

8. The vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the controller is further programmed to, individually control flow rates through the outlets based on relative temperatures between the zones.

9. A vehicle comprising:

a traction battery including a plurality of cells arranged in arrays and grouped into a plurality of cooling zones; and

a thermal management system including:

a radiator,

a heater, and

a plurality of distinct circuits each associated with one of the zones, each of the circuits including a valve having a first inlet fluidly connected to the radiator and a second inlet fluidly connected to the heater, wherein the thermal management system is configured to provide individual heating or cooling to each of the circuits via actuation of the valves to independently control temperatures of the zones; and

a controller programmed to, in response to one of the zones exceeding a first threshold temperature and another of the zones being less than a second threshold temperature at a same time instance, simultaneously command the thermal management system to (i) provide cooling to the circuit associated with the one of the zones and (ii) provide heating to the circuit associated with the another of the zones.

10. The vehicle of claim 9 further comprising a plurality of temperatures sensors each associated with one of the zones and configured to output a signal indicative of a temperature of the associated zone.

11. The vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the thermal management system further includes:

a heating loop,

a cooling loop, and

a plurality of valves each associated with one of the circuits and each valve having a first inlet connected to the heating loop, a second inlet connected to the cooling loop, and an outlet connected to the associated circuit.

12. The vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the cooling loop includes a heat exchanger and the heating loop includes an electric heater.

13. The vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the controller is further programmed to, individually control flow rates through the outlets based on relative temperatures between the zones.

14. The vehicle of claim 9 , wherein each of the circuits includes a valve, and wherein the controller is further programmed to, in response to all of the zones exceeding the first threshold, (i) rank the zones hottest to coldest based on temperature and (ii) command the valves such that a flow rate of coolant through the circuit associated with the hottest zone is the highest and such that a flow rate of coolant through the circuit associated with the coldest zone is the lowest.

15. The vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the circuits include conduit configured to circulate a liquid coolant therethrough.

16. The vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the circuits extend through the traction battery.
