Abstract

A method including: (i) operating a pumped-heat energy storage system (“PHES system”) in a charge mode to convert electricity into stored thermal energy in a hot thermal storage medium (“HTS medium”) by transferring heat from a working fluid to a warm HTS medium, resulting in a hot HTS medium, wherein the PHES system is further operable in a generation mode to convert at least a portion of the stored thermal energy into electricity; and (ii) heating the hot HTS medium with an electric heater above a temperature achievable by transferring heat from the working fluid to the warm HTS medium.

Claims (33)

1. A method comprising:

operating a pumped-heat energy storage (“PHES”) system in a charge mode to convert electricity into stored thermal energy in a hot thermal storage (“HTS”) medium by transferring heat from a working fluid to a warm HTS medium, resulting in the hot HTS medium, wherein the PHES system is further operable in a generation mode to convert at least a portion of the stored thermal energy into electricity; and

heating the hot HTS medium with an electric heater including, at least partially, during operation of the PHES system in the charge, idle, or generation mode.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein operating the PHES system in the charge mode comprises circulating the working fluid through at least a compressor system, a hot-side heat exchanger system, a turbine system, a cold-side heat exchanger system, and back to the compressor system.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving electricity from a power generation plant; and

supplying the received electricity to the electric heater.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electric heater is a resistive heater.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein heating the hot HTS medium with the electric heater occurs in a fluid path.

6. A system comprising:

a pumped-heat energy storage (“PHES”) system, wherein the PHES system is operable in a charge mode to convert electricity into stored thermal energy in a hot thermal storage (“HTS”) medium by transferring heat from a working fluid to a warm HTS medium, resulting in the hot HTS medium, and wherein the PHES system is further operable in a generation mode to convert at least a portion of the stored thermal energy into electricity; and

an electric heater in thermal contact with the hot HTS medium, wherein the electric heater is operable to heat the hot HTS medium during operation of the PHES system in the charge, idle, or generation mode.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the PHES system comprises, when operating in the charge mode, the working fluid circulating through at least a compressor system, a hot-side heat exchanger system, a turbine system, a cold-side heat exchanger system, and back to the compressor system.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the electric heater is electrically connected to a power generation plant and receives electricity from the power generation plant.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the electric heater is a resistive heater.

10. The system of claim 6 , wherein the electric heater is located in a fluid path.

11. A method comprising:

receiving an amount of electricity from a power generation plant;

operating a pumped-heat energy storage (“PHES”) system in a charge mode consuming a first amount of the received amount of electricity during conversion of at least a portion of the received electricity into stored thermal energy in a hot thermal storage (“HTS”) medium by transferring heat from a working fluid to a warm HTS medium, resulting in the hot HTS medium;

reducing a power level of the PHES system such that it consumes a second amount of the received amount of electricity that is lower than the first amount; and

heating the hot HTS medium with an electric heater while the power generation plant is in a generation mode by consuming at least a third amount of the received amount of electricity.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein operating the PHES system in the charge mode comprises circulating the working fluid through at least a compressor system, a hot-side heat exchanger system, a turbine system, a cold-side heat exchanger system, and back to the compressor system.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second amount is zero and third amount is 100% of the first amount.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second amount is greater than zero and less than 100% of the first amount.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein heating the hot HTS medium with the electric heater further comprises heating the hot HTS medium above a temperature achievable by transferring heat from the working fluid to the warm HTS medium.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

during operation of the PHES system in the charge mode where it is consuming the first amount of the received amount of electricity, also heating the hot HTS medium with the electric heater by consuming a fourth amount of the received amount of electricity, and

wherein heating the hot HTS medium with an electric heater by consuming at least a third amount of the received amount of electricity comprises heating the hot HTS medium with an electric heater by consuming the fourth amount in addition to the third amount.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving heat energy from a power generation plant, the PHES system being thermally connected to the power generation plant.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hot HTS medium is heated above a temperature achievable by transferring heat from the working fluid to the warm HTS medium.

19. The system of claim 6 , wherein the electric heater is located in a hot HTS tank in fluid communication with the warm HTS medium.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the third amount is equivalent to the difference between the first amount and the second amount.
