Abstract

A method of providing light to plants. The method comprises providing a plurality of plants within a room, grouping each plant of the plurality of plants into one of a plurality of groups of plants based at least in part on a desired total light integral (“TLI”) for each of the plurality of plants and providing the corresponding desired TLI to each plant of the plurality of plants by sequentially providing light to each of the plurality of groups of plants during a time period. For each group of plants, each plant has a substantially similar photoperiod and a sum of the photosynthetic photon flux densities (“PPFDs”) of all plants in the group of plants is substantially similar.

Claims (21)

1. A method of providing light to plants, the method comprising:

providing a first group of plants and a second group of plants within a room, wherein plants of the first group of plants are spaced apart from plants of the second group of plants; and

sequentially providing light to the first and second groups of plants during a 24 hour time period according to a sequence by providing light to the first group of plants for a first sub-period of the time period and providing light to the second group of plants for a second sub-period of the time period wherein the first and second sub-periods are substantially non-overlapping and a sum of lengths of the first and second sub-periods is substantially equal to 24 hours;

wherein a first total photosynthetic photon flux density (“PPFD”) provided to the first group of plants during the first sub-period is approximately equal to a second total PPFD provided to the second group of plants during the second sub-period.

2. A method according to claim 1 comprising providing a first group of lights and a second group of lights in the room wherein the first group of lights corresponds to the first group of plants and the second group of lights corresponds to the second group of plants.

3. A method according to claim 2 wherein each group of lights is arranged to provide photons substantially only to its corresponding group of plants.

4. A method according to claim 2 comprising maintaining a cumulative rate of heat output of the first and second groups of lights approximately constant during the time period.

5. A method according to claim 2 wherein each group of lights is turned on only once during the time period.

6. A method according to claim 2 wherein one or more of the first and second groups of lights is turned on multiple times during the time period.

A method according to claim 2 wherein sequentially providing light to the first and second groups of plants during the time period comprises selectively turning off the second group of lights for the first sub-period and selectively turning off the first group of lights for the second sub-period.

8. A method according to claim 1 wherein the first and second sub-periods are approximately equal in length.

9. A method according to claim 1 wherein the first and second sub-periods have different lengths.

10. A method according to claim 1 wherein at least one of the first and second groups of plants is arranged across a first row of a first rack and a second row of a second rack.

11. A method according to claim 10 wherein the first row of the first rack is located at a same height as the second row of the second rack.

12. A method according to claim 1 wherein at least one of the first and second groups of plants comprises plants spaced apart throughout the room.

13. A method according to claim 1 wherein the room is arranged to substantially prevent external light from entering the room.

14. A method according to claim 1 wherein for each group of plants, the photoperiods of the plants of said group vary by less than 20%.

15. A method according to claim 1 wherein the total PPFD for the first group of plants during the first sub-period varies by less than 20% as compared to the total PPFD for the second group of plants during the second sub-period.

16. A method according to claim 1 wherein the first group of plants comprises at least two different plant varietals.

17. A method according to claim 1 wherein the first group of plants consists of a single plant varietal.

18. A method according to claim 1 wherein the first and second groups of plants are arranged in a row of racks and the plants of every second rack of the row of racks are plants of the second group of plants and the plants of every first rack of the row of racks are plants of the first group of plants.
