Abstract

An ergonomic keyboard apparatus comprising a keyboard frame including an ergonomic contour defined in part by a gabled portion of the keyboard frame that is pitched into a contoured peak that forms a first slope and a second slope on either side of the keyboard frame. A plurality of keys are disposed within the keyboard frame such that key tops of each of the plurality of keys follow the ergonomic contour of the keyboard frame. A wrist pad coupled to the keyboard frame has a gabled center portion and a surface contour that corresponds to the ergonomic contour of the keyboard frame defined by its gabled portion, first slope, and second slope. Each location along at least a portion of the surface contour of the wrist pad is elevated to at least a height of corresponding key tops of the plurality of keys.

Claims (40)

1. A keyboard comprising:

one or more processors;

a plurality of keys each configured to generate and send a control signal to the one or more processors when activated;

a wrist pad;

a kickstand integrated with the wrist pad and configured to be deployed at any of a plurality of angles relative to the wrist pad, the kickstand configured to tilt the keyboard and wrist pad relative to an underlying surface when the kickstand is deployed based on the angle that the kickstand is deployed; and

one or more sensors communicatively coupled to the one or more processors, the one or more sensors configured to detect when the kickstand is deployed.

2. The keyboard of claim 1

wherein the one or more sensors are further configured to detect a user's contact with the wrist pad.

3. The keyboard of claim 2 wherein the one or more sensors are configured to detect a location of the user's wrists on the wrist pad while the keyboard is in use.

4. The keyboard of claim 2 wherein the one or more processors are configured to interface with or operate software operable to:

determine a user's posture based on a weight distribution of the of the user's hands, palms, or wrists on a surface of the wrist pad; and

recommend a keyboard or kickstand configuration to improve the user's kinematics based on the determined weight distribution.

5. The keyboard of claim 2 wherein the one or more sensors include at least one of:

a touch sensor;

a pressure sensor; and

an inertial measurement unit.

6. The keyboard of claim 5 wherein the touch sensor is a capacitive sensor.

7. The keyboard of claim 5 wherein the pressure sensor is one of at least:

a strain gauge,

a piezoelectric-based sensor; or

a resistive sensor.

8. A wrist pad for a keyboard comprising:

one or more processors;

a wrist pad configured to be coupled to a keyboard;

a kickstand integrated with the wrist pad and configured to be deployed at a plurality of angles relative to the wrist pad, the wrist pad coupled to the keyboard and operable to tilt the keyboard and the wrist pad relative to an underlying surface when the kickstand is deployed based on the angle that the kickstand is deployed; and

one or more sensors communicatively coupled to one or more processors of the keyboard or wrist pad, the one or more sensors configured to detect when the kickstand is deployed.

9. The wrist pad of claim 8 wherein the one or more sensors are further configured to detect a user contact with the wrist pad.

10. The wrist pad of claim 9 wherein the one or more sensors are configured to detect a location of the user's wrists on the wrist pad while the keyboard is in use.

11. The wrist pad of claim 8 wherein the one or more processors are configured to interface with or operate software operable to:

determine a user's posture based on a weight distribution of the of the user's hands, palms, or wrists on a surface of the wrist pad; and

recommend a keyboard or kickstand configuration to improve the user's kinematics based on the determined weight distribution.

12. The wrist pad of claim 8 wherein the one or more sensors include at least one of:

a touch sensor;

a pressure sensor; and

an inertial measurement unit.

13. The wrist pad of claim 12 wherein the touch sensor is a capacitive sensor.

14. The wrist pad of claim 12 wherein the pressure sensor is one of at least:

a strain gauge;

a piezoelectric-based sensor; or

a resistive sensor.
