Abstract

A treatment for obesity can include: providing a superabsorbent material that includes a porous network structure formed from a mixture of a plurality of water soluble polysaccharides that are not chemically crosslinked together; and administering the superabsorbent material to a subject in an effective amount to provide a treatment for obesity in the subject. The treatment can include at least one of: reducing weight of the subject; reducing rate of weight gain in the subject; or increasing rate of weight loss in the subject. The treatment of obesity can include at least one of: reducing caloric intake into the subject; reducing caloric absorption by the gut of the subject; absorbing caloric material from the gut of the subject into the superabsorbent material; or increasing transfer of caloric material from bloodstream into gut.

Claims (22)

1. A method for treating or preventing obesity in a subject, comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of a superabsorbent material having a porous network structure without any chemical cross-linking; wherein the superabsorbent material is a dehydrated gel comprising agar, carrageenan, and konjac gum; and wherein the superabsorbent material has an absorption ratio of at least 10 in deionized water at 25° C.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is to reduce the weight of the subject, to reduce the rate of weight gain in the subject, or to increase the rate of weight loss in the subject.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is to reduce caloric intake into the subject, to reduce caloric absorption by the gut of the subject, to absorb a caloric material from the gut of the subject into the superabsorbent material, or to increase the transfer of a caloric material from bloodstream into the gut.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is obese.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is not obese, developing obesity, obese, or morbidly obese.

6. The method of claim 1 , comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of the superabsorbent material so that the subject has a slower rate of body weight gain, wherein the slower rate is compared to the rate of body weight gain of the subject prior to the administration of the superabsorbent material.

7. The method of claim 1 , comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of the superabsorbent material so that the subject has a slower rate of body weight gain when on a high fat diet, wherein the slower rate is compared to the rate of body weight gain of the subject when on the high fat diet prior to the administration of the superabsorbent material.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject has a high fat diet prior to the administration of the superabsorbent material.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is to reduce total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), fasting insulin level, or fasting leptin level in the subject.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is to inhibit total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), fasting insulin level, or fasting leptin level from increasing in the subject.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is to reduce a HOMA-IR value for the subject.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is to inhibit a HOMA-IR value from increasing for the subject.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is to reduce fat in the subject.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is to inhibit fat from increasing in the subject.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the superabsorbent material is administered in a dehydrated or powdered form.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the superabsorbent material comprises at least 10% by weight of agar.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the superabsorbent material comprises at least 20% by weight of carrageenan.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the superabsorbent material comprises agar, carrageenan, and konjac gum at a weight ratio of 10:1:1, 1:1:1, 1:1:2, 1:2:1, 2:1:1, or 2:5:5.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the superabsorbent material comprises agar, carrageenan, and konjac gum at a weight ratio of 1:1:1, 1:1:2, or 1:2:1.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the superabsorbent material has an absorption ratio of at least 20 or up to 200 in deionized water at 25° C.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the superabsorbent material has an absorption ratio of at least 50 or up to 200 in deionized water at 25° C.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the superabsorbent material has an absorption ratio of at least 100 or up to 200 in deionized water at 25° C.
