Abstract

A system which, with data provided by one or more sensors, detects a user's alteration of the geometries of parts of his face, head, neck, and/or shoulders. It determines the extent of each alteration and normalizes it with respect to the maximum possible range of each alteration so as to assign to each part-specific alteration a numeric score indicative of its extent. The normalized part-specific scores are combined so as to produce a composite numeric code representative of the complete set of simultaneously-executed geometric alterations. Each composite code is translated, or interpreted, relative to an appropriate context defined by an embodiment, an application executing on an embodiment, or by the user. For example, each composite code might be interpreted as, or assigned to, a specific alphanumeric letter, a color, a musical note, etc. Through the use of this system, a user may communicate data and/or commands to a computerized device, while retaining full use of his hands and his voice for other tasks, and while being free to focus his visual attention on something other than the system.

Claims (44)

1. A user control system for a multi-user internet program, comprising:

a sensor configured to capture data correlated to a geometry of an anatomical feature selected from a group consisting of a face, a head, a neck, and shoulders;

a conversion subroutine adapted to receive captured data from the sensor and output an anatomically-dependent symbolic instruction derived from said captured data; and

a symbolic-instruction-consuming subroutine adapted to receive the anatomically-dependent symbolic instruction and alter an operation of the multi-user internet program on the basis of said anatomically-dependent symbolic instruction.

The user control system for a multi-user internet program of claim 1 , wherein the operation altered is one of: a facial configuration of a virtual player in the multi-user internet program; an initiation of an action of a virtual player in the multi-user internet program including one of eating food and gathering items; a termination of an action of a virtual player in the multi-user internet program including one of eating food and gathering items; and an initiation of a pattern of movement including one of walking, running, skipping, jumping, swimming, flying, crouching, punching, and waving.

3. A method for controlling a multi-user internet program using facial distortions, comprising:

defining a set of user commands;

defining a set of alterations in facial geometry corresponding to the set of user commands;

recording sensor data from a sensor encoding information of user facial features;

deriving information of alterations in user facial geometry from recorded sensor data encoding information of user facial features;

automatically selecting a user command from the set of user commands based on information of alterations in user facial geometry;

implementing the user command to alter a behavior of the multi-user internet program.

The method for controlling a multi-user internet program using facial distortions of claim 3 , wherein the behavior altered is one of: a facial configuration of a virtual player in the multi-user internet program; an initiation of an action of a virtual player in the multi-user internet program including one of eating food and gathering items; a termination of an action of a virtual player in the multi-user internet program including one of eating food and gathering items; and an initiation of a pattern of movement including one of walking, running, skipping, jumping, swimming, flying, crouching, punching, and waving.

5. A system for converting facial distortions to computer control signals in a gaming environment, comprising:

a sensor configured to capture data related to a factor that changes contemporaneously with a change in a geometry of one of a user's face, head, neck, and shoulders,

the change in geometry manifested by an innervation of a nerve of the user,

the innervation of the nerve resulting in a contraction of a muscle of the user,

the contraction of the muscle contributing to a manifestation of the change in geometry;

a conversion processor receiving the captured data and generating in response thereto a user-selected symbolic value; and

an alteration processor receiving the user-selected symbolic value, wherein, based on the user-selected symbolic value, the system alters at least one component of at least one feature in the gaming environment.

6. The system for converting facial distortions to computer control signals of claim 5 , wherein the conversion processor and the alteration processor are the same processor.

7. The system for converting facial distortions to computer control signals of claim 5 , wherein the sensor is comprised, at least in part, of one of an accelerometer, a video camera, and a facial-recognition apparatus.

8. The system for converting facial distortions to computer control signals of claim 5 , wherein the user-selected symbolic value specifies a facial configuration of virtual player in a multiplayer entertainment game.

9. The system for converting facial distortions to computer control signals of claim 5 , wherein the user-selected symbolic value specifies an action to be executed by a virtual player in a multiplayer entertainment game.

10. A user control system of a virtual player within a multi-player entertainment program, comprising:

a sensor configured to capture data related to a factor that changes contemporaneously with a change in a geometry of one of a user's face, head, neck, and shoulders,

the change in geometry manifested by an innervation of a nerve of the user,

the innervation of the nerve resulting in a contraction of a muscle of the user,

the contraction of the muscle contributing to a manifestation of the change in geometry;

a conversion processor receiving the captured data and generating in response thereto a user-selected symbolic value;

and an alteration processor receiving the user-selected symbolic value, wherein, based on the user-selected symbolic value, the user control system alters at least one of an appearance, a behavior, an orientation, a pattern of movement, an operational state, and a characteristic of a virtual player within a multi-player entertainment program.

11. The user control system of a virtual player within a multi-player entertainment program of claim 10 , wherein the conversion processor and the alteration processor are the same processor.

12. The user control system of a virtual player within a multi-player entertainment program of claim 10 , wherein the sensor is comprised, at least in part, of one of an accelerometer, a video camera, and a facial-recognition apparatus.

13. The user control system of a virtual player within a multi-player entertainment program of claim 10 , wherein the user-selected symbolic value specifies a facial configuration of the virtual player in a multiplayer entertainment game.

14. The user control system of a virtual player within a multi-player entertainment program of claim 10 , wherein the user-selected symbolic value specifies an action to be executed by the virtual player in a multiplayer entertainment game.

15. A method of facilitating a user's control of a virtual player within a multiplayer entertainment program using facial distortions, comprising:

defining a lexicon of symbolic virtual-player control signals which a user may specify in order to control a behavior of a virtual player within a multiplayer entertainment program;

defining, for each symbolic virtual-player control signal in the lexicon, a user-manifested facial-distortion signal comprising, at least in part, one of a geometry of one of the user's face, head, neck, and shoulders, and an alteration of a geometry of one of the user's face, head, neck, and shoulders;

obtaining a symbolic virtual-player control signal from a measurement provided by at least one sensor of a geometry of one of the user's face, head, neck, and shoulders;

identifying within the lexicon a symbolic virtual-player control signal associated with the measurement;

implementing the identified symbolic virtual-player control signal to alter a behavior of the virtual player within the multiplayer-entertainment-program.

16. The method of facilitating a user's control of a virtual player within a multiplayer entertainment program using facial distortions of claim 15 , wherein the sensor is comprised, at least in part, of one of an accelerometer, a video camera, and a facial-recognition apparatus.

The method of facilitating a user's control of a virtual player within a multiplayer entertainment program using facial distortions of claim 15 , wherein the user-selected symbolic virtual-player control signal specifies a facial configuration of a virtual player in the multiplayer entertainment program.

18. The method of facilitating a user's control of a virtual player within a multiplayer entertainment program using facial distortions of claim 15 , wherein the user-selected symbolic virtual-player control signal specifies an action to be executed by a virtual player in the multiplayer entertainment program.
