Abstract

In order to guide the user to a target object that is located outside of the field of view of the wearer of the AR computing device, a rotational navigation system displays on a display device an arrow or a pointer, referred to as a direction indicator. The direction indicator is generated based on the angle between the direction of the user's head and the direction of the target object, and a correction coefficient. The correction coefficient is defined such that the greater the angle between the direction of the user's head and the direction of the target object, the greater is the horizontal component of the direction indicator.

Claims (42)

1. A method comprising:

at a computing device comprising a display device, calculating an angle between a normal of a display plane of the display device and a direction of a target object;

determining a correction coefficient, based on the angle;

casting a vector representing the direction of the target object on the display plane;

generating a normalized cast vector by normalizing a result of the casting;

multiplying a horizontal component of the normalized cast vector by the correction coefficient to produce a resulting vector;

using the resulting vector to generate a direction indicator; and

causing display of the direction indicator on the display device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the multiplying of the horizontal component of the normalized cast vector by the correction coefficient is in response to determining that the normalized cast vector is not NULL.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating of the normalized cast vector is in response to determining that the angle is greater than a field of view threshold, the field of view threshold defined by dimensions of the display device.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the field of view threshold is 15 degrees.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the calculating of the angle is based on equation sin(alpha)=dot(V, T), wherein alpha is the angle between the normal of the display plane and the direction of the target object, V is the normal of the display plane and T is the direction of the target object.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining of the correction coefficient comprises utilizing an iterative approach.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining of the correction coefficient comprises utilizing a continuous approach.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is a pair of AR glasses.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the display device is a see-trough head up display.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is a virtual reality headset.

11. A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

a non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that when executed by the one or more processors cause the one or more processors to perform operations at a computing device comprising a display device, calculating an angle between a normal of a display plane of the display device and a direction of a target object;

determining a correction coefficient, based on the angle;

casting a vector representing the direction of the target object on the display plane;

generating a normalized cast vector by normalizing a result of the casting;

multiplying a horizontal component of the normalized cast vector by the correction coefficient to produce a resulting vector;

using the resulting vector to generate a direction indicator; and

causing display of the direction indicator on the display device.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the multiplying of the horizontal component of the normalized cast vector by the correction coefficient is in response to determining that the normalized cast vector is not NULL.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the generating of the normalized cast vector is in response to determining that the angle is greater than a field of view threshold, the field of view threshold defined by dimensions of the display device.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the field of view threshold is 15 degrees.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the calculating of the angle is based on equation sin(alpha)=dot(V, T), wherein alpha is the angle between the normal of the display plane and the direction of the target object, V is the normal of the display plane and T is the direction of the target object.
