Abstract

A fracturing fluid may include an aqueous base fluid; a proppant material; and hydrophilic fibers having a length of about 250 microns to 10 millimeters. A method of performing a fracturing operation may include injecting a fracturing fluid comprising hydrophilic fibers having a length of about 250 microns to 10 millimeters and proppant into a wellbore.

Claims (33)

1. A fracturing fluid, comprising:

two or more fracking fluid stages, wherein each fracking fluid stage of the two or more fracking fluid stages comprise:

an aqueous base fluid;

a gel;

a proppant material; and

a plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers having respective fiber lengths, wherein a ratio between an estimated fracture width and the respective fiber lengths is between about 0.25 and about 10.

2. The fracturing fluid of claim 1 , wherein the respective fiber lengths of the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers are between about 0.5 millimeters (mm) to 1 mm.

3. The fracturing fluid of claim 1 , wherein the respective fiber lengths of the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers is different in each fracking fluid stage of the two or more fracking fluid stages.

4. The fracturing fluid of claim 1 , wherein each fracking fluid stage of the two or more fracking fluid stages comprise different types of the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers.

5. The fracturing fluid of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers further comprise a powdered cellulose fiber, a nanofibrillated cellulose fiber, a microfibrillated cellulose fiber, a nanocrystalline cellulose fiber, or a combination thereof.

6. The fracturing fluid of claim 1 , wherein a second ratio between the respective fiber lengths of the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers and respective fiber widths of the plurality of hydrophilic pulp fibers is between about 5 and about 1000.

7. The fracturing fluid of claim 1 , wherein an amount of the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers used in the fracturing fluid is from about 1 pound (lb) per 1000 gallons fluid to about 100 lbs per 1000 gallons fluid.

8. The fracturing fluid of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers are a plurality of hydrophilic, pulp cellulose-based fibers.

9. A method of performing a fracturing operation, comprising:

injecting a fracturing fluid into a wellbore, wherein the fracturing fluid comprises:

a gel;

a proppant material; and

a plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers for transporting the proppant material into one or more fractures within a subterranean well, wherein the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers have respective fiber lengths and the one or more fractures have an estimated fracture width, and wherein a ratio between the estimated fracture width and the respective fiber lengths is between about 0.25 and about 10.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the respective fiber lengths of the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers are between about 0.5 millimeters (mm) to 1 mm.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers further comprise a powdered cellulose fiber, a nanofibrillated cellulose fiber, a microfibrillated cellulose fiber, a nanocrystalline cellulose fiber, or a combination thereof.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein a second ratio between the respective fiber lengths of the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers and respective fiber widths of the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers is between about 5 and about 1000.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein an amount of the plurality of hydrophilic, pulp fibers used in the fracturing fluid is from about 1 pound (lb) per 1000 gallons fluid to about 100 lbs per 1000 gallons fluid.

14. A method of performing a fracturing operation, comprising:

injecting a first fracturing fluid stage into a subterranean formation, the first fracturing fluid stage comprising a gel and a first type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber; and

injecting a second fracturing fluid stage into the subterranean formation, the second fracturing fluid stage comprising the gel and a second type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber, wherein a respective fiber length of the second type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber is different than a respective fiber length of the first type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber;

wherein at least one of the first type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber or the second type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber transports proppant into one or more fractures within the subterranean formation, and

wherein a first ratio between an estimated fracture width of the one or more fractures and the respective fiber length of the first type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber, a second ratio between the estimated fracture width and the respective fiber length of the second type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber, or both, are between about 0.25 and about 10.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the respective fiber length of the first type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber, the respective fiber length of the second type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber, or both, are between about 0.5 millimeters (mm) to 1 mm.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the respective fiber length of the first type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber is shorter than the respective fiber length of the second type of hydrophilic, pulp fiber.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the estimated fracture width for the first fracturing fluid stage is different from the estimated fracture width for the second fracturing fluid stage.
