Abstract

Apparatus and methods for electrically adjustable antenna stencils for controlling antenna pattern for beamforming are provided. In certain embodiments, a mobile device includes a front-end system including a plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits, an antenna array including a plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils each connected to a corresponding one of the plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits, and a control circuit configured to control the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils to control an antenna pattern of the antenna array.

Claims (26)

1. A communication system comprising:

a plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits;

an antenna array including a plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils each connected to a corresponding one of the plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits, the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils including a conductive ink; and

a control circuit configured to control the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils to control an antenna pattern of the antenna array, the control circuit configured to guide the conductive ink to achieve the antenna pattern.

2. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils are separately controlled by the control circuit.

3. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils are commonly controlled by the control circuit.

4. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits include a plurality of gain and phase adjustment circuits for beamforming.

5. The communication system of claim 4 , wherein each of the plurality of gain and phase adjustment circuits is separately controlled by the control circuit.

6. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is operable to control the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils to form the antenna pattern from the conductive ink.

7. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits include a plurality of power amplifiers each configured to provide a radio frequency transmit signal to a corresponding one of the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils.

8. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits include a plurality of low noise amplifiers each configured to receive a radio frequency receive signal from a corresponding one of the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils.

9. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits include a plurality of transmit/receive switches each connected to a corresponding one of the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils.

10. The communication system of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits further include a plurality of power amplifiers having a plurality of outputs connected to the plurality of transmit/receive switches, and a plurality of low noise amplifiers having a plurality of inputs connected to the plurality of transmit/receive switches.

11. A method of wireless communication, the method comprising:

conditioning a plurality of radio frequency signals using a plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits;

wirelessly communicating the plurality of radio frequency signals using an antenna array having an antenna pattern formed by a plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils that include a conductive ink, each of the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils connected to a corresponding one of the plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits; and

controlling the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils to control the antenna pattern of the antenna array using a control circuit, including using the control circuit to guide the conductive ink to achieve the antenna pattern.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein controlling the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils includes separately controlling each of the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein controlling the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils includes commonly controlling the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising controlling a plurality of gain and phase adjustment circuits of the plurality of radio frequency signal conditioning circuits to provide beamforming.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising separately controlling each of the plurality of gain and phase adjustment circuits using the control circuit.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein controlling the plurality of electrically-adjustable stencils includes forming the antenna pattern from the conductive ink.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein conditioning the plurality of radio frequency signals includes amplifying the plurality of radio frequency signals using a plurality of power amplifiers, and providing the plurality of radio frequency signals to the antenna array.
