Abstract

A surgical instrument. The surgical instrument has a force delivery system which communicates a changing force to a user of the surgical instrument when a limit of a surgical function is reached. A sensor senses position of a moving element to communicate a signal to the force delivery system. In various embodiments, the system generates a vibratory force to signal the user.

Claims (56)

1. A surgical instrument configured to deliver a surgical function, the surgical instrument comprising:

a handle control comprising a feedback system, wherein the feedback system is configured to provide an alert to a user holding the handle control;

a shaft;

an articulation joint;

an end effector extending from the shaft by way of the articulation joint;

an I-beam configured to move between a plurality of positions within the end effector, wherein the plurality of positions comprises a range of limit positions of the surgical function; and

a control circuit comprising a sensor configured to detect when the I-beam reaches the range of limit positions, wherein the control circuit is to:

communicate sensor signals from the sensor;

identify sensor signals indicative of the I-beam being positioned within the range of limited positions; and

provide the user with a feedback upon the identification of sensor signals indicative of the I-beam being positioned within the range of limit positions.

2. A surgical assembly, comprising:

a shaft;

a driver actuatable by a motor;

an articulation joint;

an end effector attached to the shaft by way of the articulation joint, wherein the driver is movable through a range of motion to actuate a function of the end effector, and wherein the end effector comprises:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw; and

a control circuit to:

sense the position of the driver through the range of motion;

determine that the sensed position is within a range of limit positions; and

deliver a feedback to a user based on the determination that the sensed position is within the range of limit positions.

3. The surgical assembly of claim 2 , wherein the driver comprises a firing driver and an I-beam, and wherein the range of limit positions comprises a range of firing stroke limit positions.

4. The surgical assembly of claim 2 , wherein the driver comprises an articulation cable to articulate the end effector relative to the shaft.

5. The surgical assembly of claim 4 , wherein the feedback comprises a motorized feedback force.

6. The surgical assembly of claim 2 , wherein the driver comprises a closure driver to move the second jaw relative to the first jaw, wherein the range of limit positions comprises a range of closure stroke limit positions.

7. A surgical assembly, comprising:

a shaft;

a motorized driver;

an end effector attached to the shaft, wherein the motorized driver is movable between a plurality of positions to actuate a function of the end effector, wherein the plurality of positions comprises a range of limit positions, and wherein the end effector comprises:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw; and

a control circuit to:

monitor the position of the motorized driver;

determine that the monitored position is approaching the range of limit positions; and

deliver a feedback force to a user based on the determination that the monitored position is approaching the range of limit positions.

8. The surgical assembly of claim 7 , wherein the motorized driver comprises an I-beam, and wherein the range of limit positions comprises a range of firing stroke limit positions.

9. The surgical assembly of claim 7 , further comprising an articulation joint, wherein the motorized driver comprises an articulation cable to articulate the end effector relative to the shaft by way of the articulation joint.

10. The surgical assembly of claim 9 , wherein the feedback force is motorized.

11. The surgical assembly of claim 10 , further comprising a sensor to detect the position of the motorized driver.

12. The surgical assembly of claim 7 , wherein the motorized driver comprises a closure driver to move the second jaw relative to the first jaw, and wherein the range of limit positions comprises a range of closure stroke limit positions.

13. A surgical assembly, comprising:

a shaft;

a driver actuatable by a motor;

a sensor to detect the position of the driver;

an end effector attached to the shaft, wherein the driver is movable between a plurality of positions to actuate a function of the end effector, wherein the plurality of positions comprises a range of limit positions, and wherein the end effector comprises:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw; and

a control circuit to:

receive a signal from the sensor indicative of the position of the driver;

determine the position of the driver based on the received signal;

determine the driver is approaching the range of limit positions based on the determined position; and

send a feedback signal to alert a user based on the determination that the driver is approaching the range of limit positions.

14. The surgical assembly of claim 13 , wherein the driver comprises an I-beam, and wherein the range of limit positions comprises a range of firing stroke limit positions.

15. The surgical assembly of claim 13 , further comprising an articulation joint, wherein the driver comprises an articulation cable to articulate the end effector relative to the shaft by way of the articulation joint, and wherein the range of limit positions is indicative of an articulation limit range.

16. The surgical assembly of claim 15 , wherein the control circuit is further to apply a motorized feedback force based on the feedback signal.

17. The surgical assembly of claim 13 , wherein the driver comprises a closure driver to move the second jaw relative to the first jaw, and wherein the range of limit positions comprises a range of closure stroke limit positions.
