Abstract

One embodiment of the present invention facilitates address resolution protocol (ARP) resolution in an extended subnet. A gateway of a first segment of the extended subnet can determine that a layer-2 address corresponding to a layer-3 destination address of a packet is locally unavailable. The gateway can then determine whether a respective egress interface of an ARP request for the layer-3 destination address is associated with a layer-2 subnet extension from the first segment to a second segment of the extended subnet. The extension can provide a common layer-2 broadcast domain comprising the first and second segments with a same default gateway layer-3 address. If the egress interface is associated with the extension, the gateway can insert a layer-3 address of a first endpoint associated with the extension as a source protocol address in the ARP request. The gateway can send the modified ARP request via the egress interface.

Claims (44)

1. A method for facilitating efficient address resolution protocol (ARP) resolution in an extended subnet, comprising:

determining, by a gateway of a first network segment of the extended subnet, that a media access control (MAC) address corresponding to a destination Internet Protocol (IP) address of a packet is unavailable in a local data structure for storing information learned from the ARP resolution;

determining, for an ARP request for the destination IP address, whether an egress interface is associated with a layer-2 subnet extension from the first network segment to a second network segment of the extended subnet, wherein the extension provides a common layer-2 broadcast domain comprising the first and second network segments, and wherein the first and second network segments are associated with a same default gateway IP address;

in response to the egress interface being associated with the extension, modifying the ARP request by replacing the default gateway IP address with a first IP address of a first endpoint associated with the extension as a source protocol address in the ARP request, wherein a data connection between the first endpoint and a second endpoint at the second network segment facilitates the extension, and wherein the second endpoint is associated with a second IP address; and

sending the modified ARP request to the second endpoint via the egress interface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the default gateway IP address is allocated to a gateway interface via which the packet is received.

3. The method of claim 1 , in response to the egress interface not being associated with the extension, sending the ARP request with the default gateway IP address as a source protocol address in the ARP request via the egress interface.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the default gateway IP address is further allocated to a second gateway interface of a second gateway of the second network segment, wherein the second endpoint is configured at the second gateway.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, at the gateway via the first endpoint, an ARP response to the modified ARP request, wherein the ARP response facilitates the ARP resolution;

obtaining an address translation from the ARP response; and

storing the address translation in the local data structure.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the ARP response includes the first IP address of the first endpoint as a target protocol address.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising including a MAC address of the gateway as a source hardware address in the modified ARP request.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data connection includes a tunnel established over a control channel between the first and second endpoints.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that when executed by a computer cause the computer to perform a method for facilitating efficient address resolution protocol (ARP) resolution in an extended subnet, the method comprising:

determining, by a gateway of a first network segment of the extended subnet, that a media access control (MAC) address corresponding to a destination Internet Protocol (IP) address of a packet is unavailable in a local data structure for storing information learned from the ARP resolution;

determining, for an ARP request for the destination IP address, whether an egress interface is associated with a layer-2 subnet extension from the first network segment to a second network segment of the extended subnet, wherein the extension provides a common layer-2 broadcast domain comprising the first and second network segments, and wherein the first and second network segments are associated with a same default gateway IP address;

in response to the egress interface being associated with the extension, modifying the ARP request by replacing the default gateway IP address with a first IP address of a first endpoint associated with the extension as a source protocol address in the ARP request, wherein a data connection between the first endpoint and a second endpoint at the second network segment facilitates the extension, and wherein the second endpoint is associated with a second IP address; and

sending the modified ARP request to the second endpoint via the egress interface.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the default gateway IP address is allocated to a gateway interface via which the packet is received.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises, in response to the egress interface not being associated with the extension, sending the ARP request with the default gateway IP address as a source protocol address in the ARP request via the egress interface.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the default gateway IP address is further allocated to a second gateway interface of a second gateway of the second network segment, wherein the second endpoint is configured at the second gateway.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises:

receiving, at the gateway via the first endpoint, an ARP response to the modified ARP request, wherein the ARP response facilitates the ARP resolution;

obtaining an address translation from the ARP response; and

storing the address translation in the local data structure.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the ARP response includes the first IP address of the first endpoint as a target protocol address.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises including a MAC address of the gateway as a source hardware address in the modified ARP request.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the data connection includes a tunnel established over a control channel between the first and second endpoints.

17. A computer system, comprising:

a processor;

a storage device; and

a memory coupled to the processor and storing instructions, which when executed by the processor cause the processor to perform a method for facilitating efficient address resolution protocol (ARP) resolution in an extended subnet, the method comprising:

determining, by the computer system, that a media access control (MAC) address corresponding to a destination Internet Protocol (IP) address of a packet is unavailable in a local data structure for storing information learned from the ARP resolution, wherein the computer system operates as a gateway of a first network segment of the extended subnet;

determining, for an ARP request for the destination IP address, whether an egress interface is associated with a layer-2 subnet extension from the first network segment to a second network segment of the extended subnet, wherein the extension provides a common layer-2 broadcast domain comprising the first and second network segments, and wherein the first and second network segments are associated with a same default gateway IP address;

in response to the egress interface being associated with the extension, modifying the ARP request by replacing the default gateway IP address with a first IP address of a first endpoint associated with the extension as a source protocol address in the ARP request, wherein a data connection between the first endpoint and a second endpoint at the second network segment facilitates the extension, and wherein the second endpoint is associated with a second IP address; and

sending the modified ARP request to the second endpoint via the egress interface.

18. The computer system of claim 17 , wherein the default gateway IP address is allocated to a gateway interface via which the packet is received.
