Abstract

Fibrous structures comprising spunbond filaments and solid additives and methods for making such fibrous structures are provided.

Claims (19)

1. An absorbent towel comprising a fibrous structure comprising a plurality of monocomponent spunbond filaments and a plurality of meltblown filaments, commingled with a plurality of solid additives and a plurality of cellulosic fibers, wherein the plurality of cellulosic fibers are dispersed throughout at least a first portion of the plurality of monocomponent spunbond filaments and plurality of meltblown filaments, wherein the fibrous structure exhibits a pore volume distribution such that greater than 50% of the total pore volume present in the fibrous structure exists in pores of radii of from about 121 μm to about 200 μm.

2. The absorbent towel according to claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of cellulosic fibers comprises a wood pulp fiber.

3. The absorbent towel according to claim 2 wherein the wood pulp fiber is selected from the group consisting of: Southern Softwood Kraft pulp fibers, Northern Softwood Kraft pulp fibers, Eucalyptus pulp fibers, Acacia pulp fibers.

4. The absorbent towel according to claim 1 wherein the fibrous structure further comprises a second portion of the plurality of monocomponent spunbond filaments present on a surface of the fibrous structure.

5. The absorbent towel according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of monocomponent spunbond filaments comprises a thermoplastic polymer.

6. The absorbent towel according to claim 5 wherein the thermoplastic polymer is selected from the group consisting of: polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoate, polycaprolactone and mixtures thereof.

7. The absorbent towel according to claim 1 wherein the plurality of monocomponent spunbond filaments comprises a natural polymer.

8. The absorbent towel according to claim 7 wherein the natural polymer is selected from the group consisting of: starch, starch derivatives, cellulose, cellulose derivatives, hemicellulose, hemicellulose derivatives and mixtures thereof.

9. The absorbent towel according to claim 4 wherein the second portion of the plurality of monocomponent spunbond filaments are present on the surface of the fibrous structure forms a layer of the fibrous structure.

10. The absorbent towel according to claim 1 wherein the fibrous structure comprises at least a bi-modal pore volume distribution.

11. The absorbent towel according to claim 10 wherein greater than about 2% of the total pore volume present in the fibrous structure exists in pores of radii of less than about 100 μm.

12. The absorbent towel according to claim 11 wherein greater than about 2% of the total pore volume present in the fibrous structure exists in pores of radii of less than about 80 μm.

13. The absorbent towel according to claim 1 wherein the absorbent towel exhibits a VFS of at least 5 g/g.

14. The absorbent towel according to claim 1 wherein the absorbent towel is convolutedly wound upon itself in the form of a roll.

15. A method for making an absorbent towel comprising a fibrous structure according to claim 1 wherein the method comprises the step of commingling a plurality of monocomponent spunbond filaments and a plurality of meltblown filaments, with a plurality of solid additives and a plurality of cellulosic fibers such that the plurality of cellulosic fibers is dispersed throughout at least a first portion of the plurality of monocomponent spunbond filaments and plurality of meltblown filaments to form the fibrous structure.

16. The method according to claim 15 wherein at least one of the plurality of cellulosic fibers comprises a wood pulp fiber.

17. The method according to claim 15 wherein the plurality of monocomponent spunbond filaments comprise thermoplastic filaments.

18. The method according to claim 15 wherein the plurality of monocomponent spunbond filaments comprise natural polymers.

19. The method according to claim 16 wherein the wood pulp fiber is selected from the group consisting of: Southern Softwood Kraft pulp fibers, Northern Softwood Kraft pulp fibers, Eucalyptus pulp fibers, Acacia pulp fibers.
