Abstract

An acidified metal oxide (“AMO”) material, preferably in monodisperse nanoparticulate form 20 nm or less in size, having a pH<7 when suspended in a 5 wt % aqueous solution and a Hammett function H 0 >−12, at least on its surface. The AMO material is useful in applications such as a battery electrode, catalyst, or photovoltaic component.

Claims (11)

1. A battery electrode material comprising a solid metal oxide nanomaterial selected from the group consisting of tin oxide, iron oxide, manganese oxide, and titanium oxide, the solid metal oxide nanomaterial having a pH<5, the pH measured when the solid metal oxide nanomaterial is dried and the dried solid metal oxide nanomaterial is suspended in an aqueous solution at 5 wt %, and a Hammet function H 0 >−12.

2. A battery electrode material according to claim 1 , the solid metal oxide nanomaterial including at least one particle dimension <20 nm in size.

3. A battery electrode material according to claim 1 , the solid metal oxide nanomaterial including at least one particle dimension <10 nm in size.

4. A battery electrode material according to claim 1 , the solid metal oxide nanomaterial including a monodisperse nanoparticulate form.

5. A battery electrode material according to claim 1 , the battery electrode material including a metal or a second solid metal oxide, the metal or second solid metal oxide being acidified and including a metal different than that of the solid metal oxide nanomaterial and selected from the group consisting of tin, iron, manganese, and titanium.

6. A battery electrode material according to claim 1 , the pH<4.

7. A battery electrode material according to claim 1 , the pH<3.

8. A battery electrode material according to claim 1 further comprising a non-acidified solid metal oxide material.

9. A battery electrode material according to claim 1 further comprising at least one of a binder material and a conductive aid.

10. A battery electrode material according to claim 1 , wherein the solid metal oxide nanomaterial is in a form M m O x /G, wherein M m O x is the tin oxide, iron oxide, manganese oxide, or titanium oxide, G is at least one electron-withdrawing surface group, and/makes a distinction between the tin oxide, iron oxide, manganese oxide, or titanium oxide and the at least one electron-withdrawing surface group, the at least one electron-withdrawing surface group including at least one of Cl, Br, BO 3 SO 4 , PO 4 , CH 3 COO, C 2 O 4 , C 6 H 5 O 7 .

11. A battery electrode material comprising an acidified solid metal oxide nanomaterial selected from the group consisting of tin oxide, iron oxide, manganese oxide, and titanium oxide, the acidified solid metal oxide nanomaterial having a pH<5, the pH measured when the acidified solid metal oxide nanomaterial is dried and the dried acidified solid metal oxide nanomaterial is suspended in an aqueous solution at 5 wt %, and a Hammett function H 0 >−12, the acidified solid metal oxide nanomaterial having a particle size less than 100 nm, the acidified solid metal oxide nanomaterial surface functionalized with at least one of Cl, Br, BO 3 SO 4 , PO 4 , CH 3 COO, C 2 O 4 , C 6 H 5 O 7 .
