Abstract

Systems, methods and devices for initiating pairing of wireless surgical instruments to a modular energy system are disclosed herein. In various aspects, a modular energy system includes an a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader that is configured to read an RFID card that is uniquely associated with a surgical instrument. When the RFID reader reads the RFID card, the RFID reader initiates a wireless pairing process with the surgical instrument. Initiating the wireless pairing process may include causing the module energy system to wirelessly search for the surgical instrument and causing a display screen to display instructions for wirelessly pairing the surgical instrument.

Claims (34)

1. A modular energy system comprising:

an energy module operably couplable to a surgical instrument, wherein the energy module is to deliver energy for driving a surgical function of the surgical instrument; and

a header module communicably couplable to the energy module, wherein the header module comprises:

a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader configured to read an RFID card that is associated with the surgical instrument when the RFID card is located proximate to the RFID reader;

a wireless circuit for wirelessly communicating with the surgical instrument; and

a controller circuit to:

receive data for wirelessly pairing the surgical instrument to the header module from the RFID reader based on the RFID reader reading the RFID card; and

cause the wireless circuit to initiate a wireless pairing process with the surgical instrument based on receiving the data.

2. The modular energy system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless circuit is to wirelessly search for the surgical instrument to initiate the wireless pairing process.

3. The modular energy system of claim 1 , further comprising a display screen communicably coupled to the header module, wherein the controller circuit is to further cause the display screen to display illustrated instructions for wirelessly pairing the surgical instrument to the header module to initiate the wireless pairing process.

4. The modular energy system of claim 3 , wherein the controller circuit is to cause the display screen to display a prompt fora user to press a button on the surgical instrument that causes the surgical instrument to enter a pairing mode.

5. The modular energy system of claim 4 , wherein the header module is configured to automatically pair with the surgical instrument after the wireless pairing process has been initiated and the surgical instrument has entered pairing mode.

6. A modular energy system comprising:

an energy module operably couplable to a surgical instrument, wherein the energy module is to deliver energy for driving a surgical function of the surgical instrument; and

a display screen communicably couplable to the energy module, wherein the display screen comprises a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader configured to read an RFID card that is associated with the surgical instrument;

a wireless circuit for wirelessly communicating with the surgical instrument; and

a controller circuit communicably coupled to the display screen and the wireless circuit, wherein the controller circuit is to:

receive data for wirelessly pairing the surgical instrument from the RFID reader based on the RFID reader reading the RFID card; and

cause the wireless circuit to initiate a wireless pairing process with the surgical instrument based on receiving the data.

7. The modular energy system of claim 6 , wherein the wireless circuit is to wirelessly search for the surgical instrument to initiate the wireless pairing process.

8. The modular energy system of claim 7 , wherein the controller circuit is to further cause the display screen to display illustrated instructions for wirelessly pairing the surgical instrument to the modular energy system to initiate the wireless pairing process.

9. The modular energy system of claim 8 , wherein the controller circuit is to cause the display screen to display a prompt for a user to press a button on the surgical instrument that causes the surgical instrument to enter a pairing mode.

10. The modular energy system of claim 9 , wherein the modular energy system is configured to automatically pair with the surgical instrument after the wireless pairing process has been initiated and the surgical instrument has entered pairing mode.

11. A modular energy system comprising:

an energy module operably couplable to a surgical instrument, wherein the energy module is to deliver energy for driving a surgical function of the surgical instrument, the energy module comprising:

a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader configured to read an RFID card that is associated with a surgical instrument;

a wireless circuit for wirelessly communicating with the surgical instrument; and

a controller circuit to:

receive data for wirelessly pairing the surgical instrument from the RFID reader based on the RFID reader reading the RFID card; and

cause the wireless circuit to initiate a wireless pairing process with the surgical instrument based on receiving the data.

12. The modular energy system of claim 11 , wherein the wireless circuit is configured to wirelessly search for the surgical instrument to initiate the wireless pairing process.

13. The modular energy system of claim 11 , further comprising a display screen communicably coupled to the energy module, wherein the controller circuit is to cause the display screen to display illustrated instructions for wirelessly pairing the surgical instrument to the energy module to initiate the wireless pairing process.

14. The modular energy system of claim 13 , wherein the controller circuit is to cause the display screen to display a prompt for a user to press a button on the surgical instrument that causes the surgical instrument to enter a pairing mode.

15. The modular energy system of claim 14 , wherein the energy module is configured to automatically pair with the surgical instrument after the wireless pairing process has been initiated and the surgical instrument has entered pairing mode.
