Abstract

Described is a method of hosting a teleconference among a plurality of client devices arranged in two or more acoustic spaces, each client device having an audio capturing capability and/or an audio rendering capability, the method comprising: grouping the plurality of client devices into two or more groups based on their belonging to respective acoustic spaces, receiving first audio streams from the plurality of client devices, generating second audio streams from the first audio streams for rendering by respective client devices among the plurality of client devices, based on the grouping of the plurality of client devices into the two or more groups, and outputting the generated second audio streams to respective client devices. Further described are corresponding computation devise, computer programs, and computer-readable storage media.

Claims (62)

1. A method comprising:

at a first location:

transmitting the first audio streams to a second location; at the second location:

determining a relative spatial arrangement of two or more audio playback devices at the second location, each of the two or more audio playback devices including rendering capability;

assigning each audio stream in the first audio streams to at least one of the two or more audio playback devices at the second location, where the assigning is based at least in part on the relative spatial arrangements of the two or more audio playback devices at the second location;

generating second audio streams from the first audio streams in accordance with the assigning; and

sending the second audio streams to the two or more audio playback devices for playback through one or more loudspeakers of the two or more audio playback devices.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that two or more audio playback devices are assigned the same audio stream from the first audio streams; and

adjusting an overall loudness of the same audio stream on each of the two or more audio playback devices.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

analyzing the first audio streams to determine if there is an active sound source at the first location; and

in accordance with determining that there is an active sound source at the first location,

determining a particular audio capture device of the two or more audio capture devices that is nearest the active sound source; and

generating one of the first audio streams from audio captured by the particular audio capture device and discarding or muting other audio captured by the other audio playback devices at the first location.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein assigning each audio stream of first audio streams to at least one of two or more audio playback devices at the second location is based on ranked metadata.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the ranked metadata includes at least one of a user-defined quality parameter or an object quality parameter.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein assigning each audio stream of the first audio streams to the at least one of two or more audio playback devices at the second location is based on input from a graphical user interface.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein assigning each audio stream of the first audio streams to the at least one of two or more audio playback devices at the second location is based on equal distribution of the first audio streams to the two or more audio playback devices.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein assigning each audio stream of the first audio streams to the at least one of two or more audio playback devices at the second location includes assigning at least one of the first audio streams to a virtual location at the second location.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein assigning at least one of the first audio streams to a virtual location at the second location includes panning the at least one of audio streams from the first audio streams to a second audio stream in the second audio streams.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

creating a group of audio capture devices based on a shared acoustic space; and

creating a subgroup of audio capture devices from the group of audio capture devices based on a grouping criteria.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the grouping criteria is at least one of operating systems or processing availabilities.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first location is a room, and the second location is an acoustic space in the room.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that a particular audio playback device at the second location renders audio through headphone loudspeakers; and

generating a second audio stream of the second audio streams that includes all the first audio streams.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the relative spatial arrangements of the two or more audio playback devices at the second location is determined by at least one of: measuring sound volumes of audio events in the first audio streams, measuring times of arrival of audio events in the first audio streams, receiving input, or visual inspection by one or more video cameras at the second location.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein a linear mapping function is used to assign each audio stream in the first audio streams to at least one of the two or more audio playback devices at the second location, and wherein the linear mapping function is based on a grouping of particular ones of the first audio streams.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the linear mapping function is changed in response to a change in the grouping of particular ones of the first audio streams.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the linear mapping function is implemented as a matrix that acts on a vector of the first set of audio streams.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

playing, by at least one audio capture device, a predetermined audio signal; and

checking for a presence of a representation of the predetermined audio signal in the first audio streams;

forming a group of audio capture devices based on the presence of the representation of the predetermined audio signal in the first audio streams captured by the group of audio capture devices; and

generating the representative audio stream from the first audio streams captured by the group of audio capture devices.

19. A non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computing apparatus, cause the computing apparatus to perform the operations comprising:

at a first location:

capturing, by two or more audio capture devices, first audio streams;

transmitting the first audio streams to a second location; at the second location:

determining a relative spatial arrangement of two or more audio playback devices at the second location, each of the audio playback devices including rendering capability;

assigning each audio stream in the first set of audio streams to at least one of the two or more audio playback devices at the second location, where the assigning is based at least in part on the relative spatial arrangements of the two or more audio playback devices at the second location;

generating second audio streams from the first set of two or more audio streams in accordance with the assigning; and

sending the second audio streams to the two or more audio playback devices for playback through one or more loudspeakers of the two or more audio playback devices.

20. A computing device, comprising:

at least one processor; and

memory storing instructions, which when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to perform operations comprising:

at a first location:

capturing, by two or more audio capture devices, first audio streams;

transmitting the first audio streams to a second location; at the second location:

determining a relative spatial arrangement of two or more audio playback devices at the second location, each of the two or more audio playback devices including rendering capability;

assigning each audio stream in the first set of audio streams to at least one of the two or more audio playback devices at the second location, where the assigning is based at least in part on the relative spatial arrangements of the two or more audio playback devices at the second location;

generating second audio streams from the first audio streams in accordance with the assigning; and

sending the second audio streams to the two or more audio playback devices for playback through one or more loudspeakers of the two or more audio playback devices.

21. A method comprising:

receiving, at a second location, first audio streams captured at a first location;

assigning each audio stream of the first audio streams to at least one of two or more audio playback devices at the second location based on a relative spatial relationship of the two or more audio playback devices, wherein a mapping is used to assign each audio stream in the first audio streams to at least one of the two or more audio playback devices at the second location, and wherein the mapping is based on a grouping of particular ones of the first audio streams at the first location, and wherein the mapping is changed in response to a change to the grouping of particular ones of the first audio streams at the first location;
