Abstract

A portable electronic device may include a housing member, a rear cover coupled to the housing member, and a top module coupled to the housing member and including a front cover defining an exterior surface and an interior surface opposite to the exterior surface, a display stack attached to the interior surface of the front cover and comprising a flexible circuit element extending from a side of the display stack, a frame member attached to the interior surface of the front cover and extending at least partially around a periphery of the display stack, and an encapsulating structure positioned between the frame member and the display stack and at least partially encapsulating a portion of a peripheral side of the display stack and the flexible circuit element. The encapsulating structure may cover at least a portion of a bottom side of the display stack.

Claims (65)

1. A portable electronic device comprising:

a housing member;

a rear cover coupled to the housing member; and

a top module coupled to the housing member and comprising:

a front cover defining an exterior surface and an interior surface opposite to the exterior surface;

a display stack attached to the interior surface of the front cover and comprising a flexible circuit element extending from a side of the display stack;

a frame member attached to the interior surface of the front cover and extending at least partially around a periphery of the display stack; and

an encapsulating structure positioned between the frame member and the display stack and at least partially encapsulating a portion of a peripheral side of the display stack and the flexible circuit element.

2. The portable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the flexible circuit element defines a loop extending from an upper portion of the display stack to a lower portion of the display stack and having a convex outer surface and a concave inner surface; and

the encapsulating structure at least partially encapsulates the convex outer surface of the loop.

3. The portable electronic device of claim 2 , wherein a portion of the encapsulating structure is positioned within the loop and in contact with the concave inner surface of the loop.

4. The portable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the encapsulating structure covers at least a portion of a bottom side of the display stack.

5. The portable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the top module further comprises a back plate coupled to the frame member and positioned below the display stack; and

a portion of the encapsulating structure is positioned between the back plate and a bottom side of the display stack and in contact with the back plate and the bottom side of the display stack.

6. The portable electronic device of claim 5 , wherein the encapsulating structure is formed by:

flowing a flowable polymer material into a volume defined by:

the peripheral side of the display stack;

the bottom side of the display stack;

the back plate; and

the frame member; and

allowing the flowable polymer material to harden to form the encapsulating structure.

7. The portable electronic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the top module further comprises a back plate coupled to the frame member and positioned below the display stack; and

a compliant polymer material is positioned between the back plate and a bottom side of the display stack and in contact with the back plate and the bottom side of the display stack.

8. A mobile phone comprising:

a housing member;

a rear cover coupled to the housing member;

a front cover coupled to the housing member and defining an exterior surface and an interior surface opposite to the exterior surface;

a display stack attached to the interior surface of the front cover and comprising a flexible circuit element defining a loop extending from an upper portion of the display stack to a lower portion of the display stack;

a frame member attached to the interior surface of the front cover and extending at least partially around a periphery of the display stack; and

a polymer potting material defining:

a first portion positioned in a region between the frame member and an outer surface of the loop of the flexible circuit element; and

a second portion positioned in the loop of the flexible circuit element.

9. The mobile phone of claim 8 , wherein:

the display stack defines:

a first peripheral side extending along a bottom side of the mobile phone;

a second peripheral side extending along a top side of the mobile phone;

a third peripheral side extending along a first lateral side of the mobile phone; and

a fourth peripheral side extending along a second lateral side of the mobile phone; and

the loop is positioned along the first peripheral side of the display stack.

10. The mobile phone of claim 9 , wherein the polymer potting material extends along the first peripheral side of the display stack and at least a portion of the third peripheral side of the display stack and at least a portion of the fourth peripheral side of the display stack.

11. The mobile phone of claim 8 , further comprising a back plate coupled to the frame member and positioned below the display stack, the back plate defining an injection port through which the polymer potting material is introduced into the region between the frame member and the outer surface of the loop of the flexible circuit element.

12. The mobile phone of claim 8 , wherein the polymer potting material is bonded to the frame member, the interior surface of the front cover, and the loop of the display stack.

13. The mobile phone of claim 8 , further comprising a transparent adhesive coupling the display stack to the interior surface of the front cover, the transparent adhesive defining:

a first portion positioned over an active area of the display stack and having a first thickness; and

a second portion positioned over an inactive area of the display stack and having a second thickness different from the first thickness.

14. The mobile phone of claim 13 , wherein:

the second portion of the transparent adhesive defines an angled ramp surface; and

the angled ramp surface deflects the display stack away from the interior surface of the front cover.

15. A portable electronic device comprising:

a housing member;

a rear cover coupled to the housing member and defining at least a portion of a rear surface of the portable electronic device; and

a top module coupled to the housing member and comprising:

a front cover defining an exterior surface and an interior surface opposite to the exterior surface, the exterior surface defining at least a portion of a front surface of the portable electronic device;

a display stack attached to the interior surface of the front cover and comprising a flexible circuit element defining a loop extending from a peripheral side of the display stack; and

a molded polymer structure bonded to the interior surface of the front cover and at least partially encapsulating an exterior portion of the loop, the molded polymer structure coupled to the housing member, thereby coupling the top module to the housing member.

16. The portable electronic device of claim 15 , wherein the molded polymer structure is formed by:

flowing a flowable polymer material against the interior surface of the front cover and the peripheral side of the display stack; and
