Abstract

An implantable pump system is provided, suitable for use as a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) system, having an implantable pump, an extracorporeal battery and a controller coupled to the implantable pump, and a programmer selectively periodically coupled to the controller to configure and adjust operating parameters of the implantable pump. The implantable pump includes a flexible membrane coupled to an actuator assembly that is magnetically engagable with electromagnetic coils, so that when the electromagnetic coils are energized, the actuator assembly causes wavelike undulations to propagate along the flexible membrane to propel blood from through the implantable pump. The controller may be programmed by a programmer to operate at frequencies and duty cycles that mimic physiologic flow rates and pulsatility while operating in an efficient manner that avoids thrombus formation, hemolysis and/or platelet activation.

Claims (28)

1. An implantable pump system comprising:

an implantable pump comprising:

a housing comprising an inlet and an outlet, the housing configured to be implanted at a patient's heart;

an actuator disposed within the housing a comprising a moving portion elastically coupled to the housing; and

a flexible membrane disposed within the housing and coupled to the moving portion of the actuator such that the flexible membrane is tensioned, the flexible membrane in fluid communication with the inlet and the outlet; and

an extracorporeal controller operatively coupled to the implantable pump, wherein the extracorporeal controller causes the actuator to move the moving portion to thereby cause the flexible membrane to move in a wave-like manner causing blood to move from the inlet to the outlet.

2. The implantable pump system of claim 1 , further comprising a rechargeable battery electrically coupled to the extracorporeal controller, wherein the rechargeable battery is extracorporeal.

3. The implantable pump system of claim 1 , wherein the extracorporeal controller is coupled to the implantable pump via a transcutaneous cable.

4. The implantable pump system of claim 1 , wherein the extracorporeal controller is programmable to cause pumping at selected frequencies, amplitudes, and/or duty cycles.

5. The implantable pump system of claim 4 , wherein the extracorporeal controller is configured to alter the selected frequencies, amplitudes, and/or duty cycles.

6. The implantable pump system of claim 1 , wherein the implantable pump is a left ventricular assist device (LVAD).

7. The implantable pump system of claim 6 , wherein the LVAD is configured to pump 4 to 6 liters of blood per minute.

8. The implantable pump system of claim 6 , wherein the LVAD is configured to pump blood to mimic a physiological pulse of 60 beats per minute.

9. The implantable pump system of claim 6 , wherein the controller adjusts operation of the implantable pump based on physiological parameter data.

10. The implantable pump system of claim 1 , further comprising a programmer selectively coupled to the extracorporeal controller and configured to adjust operating parameters of the implantable pump.

11. The implantable pump system of claim 10 , wherein the programmer is configured to program the extracorporeal controller to operate at frequencies and duty cycles that mimic physiologic flow rates and pulsatility.

12. The implantable pump system of claim 10 , further comprising a software module which permits a user to send instructions to the controller and adjust the operational parameters of the implantable pump.

13. The implantable pump system of claim 1 , wherein the implantable pump further comprises a sensor for collecting physiological parameter data and transmits the collected physiological parameter data to the controller.

14. The implantable pump system of claim 13 , wherein the sensor measures heart rate, pump pressure, flow rate, or any combination thereof.

15. A method of pumping blood from a patient's left ventricle to the patient's aorta, the method comprising:

implanting an implantable pump comprising a pump housing comprising an inlet in fluid communication with the left ventricle and an outlet in fluid communication with the aorta, the pump housing comprising an actuator disposed within the housing, a moving portion elastically coupled to the housing, and a flexible membrane coupled to the moving portion such that the flexible membrane is tensioned;

electrically connecting an extracorporeal controller to the implantable pump; and

sending electrical signals from the extracorporeal controller to the actuator to move the moving portion to thereby cause the flexible membrane to move in a wave-like manner causing blood to move from the inlet to the outlet.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising programming the extracorporeal controller to operate at frequencies and duty cycles that mimic physiologic flow rates and pulsatility.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising programming the extracorporeal controller to cause pumping at selected frequencies, amplitudes, and/or duty cycles.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising sending instructions to the extracorporeal controller to alter the selected frequencies, amplitudes, and/or duty cycles.

19. The method of claim 15 , further comprising storing data relating to operation of the implantable pump in a memory in the extracorporeal controller.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the extracorporeal controller causes the implantable pump to pump 4 to 6 liters of blood per minute and mimic a physiological pulse of 60 beats per minute.
