Abstract

A method of navigating a plurality of vehicles along a roadway includes, at a first vehicle, navigating along a section of a roadway by following a first moving position-target, the first moving position-target determined in accordance with a first tracking function defining position along the section of the roadway as a function of time, and at a second vehicle, navigating along the section of the roadway by following a second moving position-target, the second moving position-target determined in accordance with a second tracking function defining position along the section of the roadway as a function of time. A distance between the first vehicle and the second vehicle may change as the first vehicle and the second vehicle navigate along the section of the roadway.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the time interval between the first vehicle and the second vehicle remains constant as the first vehicle and the second vehicle navigate along the section of the roadway.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein a time interval between the first vehicle and the second vehicle is maintained above an established minimum value.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first vehicle calculates the first moving position-target as the first vehicle navigates along the section of the roadway; and

the second vehicle calculates the second moving position-target as the second vehicle navigates along the section of the roadway.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein:

the first vehicle includes a first clock synchronized to a reference clock;

the first vehicle calculates the first moving position-target using a time from the first clock;

the second vehicle includes a second clock synchronized with the reference clock; and

the second vehicle calculates the second moving position-target using a time from the second clock.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first moving position-target and the second moving-position target are selected from a set of moving position-targets predefined for the section of the roadway.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a third moving position-target predefined for the section of roadway is unoccupied; and

the third moving position-target is between the first moving position-target and the second moving position-target.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

at the first vehicle and while the first vehicle is navigating along the section of the roadway by following the first moving position-target:

receiving a first instruction to follow a third moving position-target, the third moving position-target determined in accordance with a third tracking function defining position along the section of the roadway as a function of time; and

transitioning from following the first moving position-target to following the third moving position-target.

9. A transportation system comprising a plurality of vehicles configured to autonomously navigate along a roadway by following moving position-targets defined for the roadway, comprising:

a transportation system controller configured to assign respective moving position-targets, from a set of moving position-targets predefined for a section of a roadway, to respective vehicles of a fleet of vehicles within the transportation system;

a first vehicle comprising:

a first drive system configured to propel the first vehicle;

a first steering system configured to steer the first vehicle; and

a first vehicle controller configured to navigate the first vehicle along the section of the roadway by following a first moving position-target assigned by the transportation system controller, the first moving position-target determined in accordance with a first tracking function, the first tracking function defining position, with respect to the section of the roadway, as a function of time; and

a second vehicle comprising:

a second drive system configured to propel the second vehicle;

a second steering system configured to steer the second vehicle; and

a second vehicle controller configured to navigate the second vehicle along the section of the roadway by following a second moving position-target assigned by the transportation system controller, the second moving position-target determined in accordance with a second tracking function different from the first tracking function, the second tracking function defining position, with respect to the section of the roadway, as a function of time, wherein

a distance between the first vehicle and the second vehicle changes as the first vehicle and the second vehicle navigate along the section of the roadway.

10. The transportation system of claim 9 , wherein a time interval between the first vehicle and the second vehicle remains constant as the first vehicle and the second vehicle navigate along the section of the roadway.

11. The transportation system of claim 10 , wherein:

the time interval between the first vehicle and the second vehicle at a given time is defined by the first tracking function and the second tracking function; and

the distance between the first vehicle and the second vehicle at the given time is defined by the first tracking function and the second tracking function.

12. The transportation system of claim 9 , wherein a time interval between the first vehicle and the second vehicle is maintained above an established minimum value.

13. The transportation system of claim 9 , wherein:

the first vehicle controller is configured to calculate the first moving position-target as the first vehicle navigates along the section of the roadway; and

the second vehicle controller is configured to calculate the second moving position-target as the second vehicle navigates along the section of the roadway.
