Abstract

Rotation mechanisms for rotating a payload in two, first and second degrees of freedom (DOF), comprising a static base, a first rotation arm coupled mechanically to the static base through a first rotation joint and used for rotating the payload relative to the static base around a first rotation axis that passes through the first rotation joint, a second rotation arm coupled mechanically to the static base through a second rotation joint and used for rotating the payload relative to the static base around a second rotation axis that passes through the second rotation joint, and a follower member rigidly coupled to the payload and arranged to keep a constant distance from the second rotation arm, wherein the rotation of the first arm rotates the payload around the first DOF and the rotation of the second arm rotate the payload around the second DOF.

Claims (13)

1. A rotation mechanism, comprising:

a static base having a first member and second member perpendicular to one another;

a first motor rigidly attached to the first member of the static base; and

a second motor rigidly attached to the second member of the static base,

wherein the first motor and the second motor are operative to rotate a payload in two, first and second, rotational degrees of freedom (DOF) using only three rotation joints, and

wherein the second motor is operative to rotate the payload by rotating a second rotation arm around a second rotation axis, and wherein the second rotation arm is mechanically coupled to the static base through a second rotation joint of the only three rotation joints.

2. The rotation mechanism of claim 1 , wherein each of the only three rotation joints is a ball-bearing.

3. The rotation mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the first motor is operative to rotate the payload in the first DOF by rotating a first rotation arm around a first rotation axis, and wherein the first rotation arm is mechanically coupled to the static base through a first rotation joint of the only three rotation joints.

4. The rotation mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the payload is a camera.

5. The rotation mechanism of claim 3 , wherein the payload is mechanically coupled to the first rotation arm through a third rotation joint of the only three rotation joints, and wherein the third rotation joint allows the payload to rotate in the second DOF.

6. The rotation mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the second rotation arm includes a ring section centered around the first rotation axis.

7. The rotation mechanism of claim 1 , further comprising a magnetic member rigidly coupled to the payload and arranged to keep a constant distance from the second rotation arm.

8. The rotation mechanism of claim 7 , wherein the magnetic member is separated from the second rotation arm by a constant air-gap.
