Abstract

A bed integrates sensors and other inputs to detect specific sleep environment conditions including point-specific pressure and/or temperature conditions. The bed includes a controller for commanding actuator or other devices to adjust these conditions. The controller may do so based on reference patterns for conditions and profiles of desired conditions. Information regarding the conditions may be provided to a remote computer, which may analyze the conditions and provide revised profiles of desired conditions.

Claims (30)

1. A bed system, comprising:

a sleep surface;

a plurality of sensors for providing pressure information for a plurality of different zones of the sleep surface and sleep stage information of a user;

a plurality of actuators to adjust pressures for the plurality of different zones of the sleep surface; and

a first controller configured to receive the pressure information and to command the plurality of actuators to adjust the pressures to desired pressures based on the pressure information and a sleep therapy profile for the user on the sleep surface, the sleep therapy profile specifying the desired pressures;

the first controller connected to a remote server over a network and configured to send the pressure information and sleep stage information of the user to the remote server; and

the first controller configured to receive a new sleep therapy profile over the network from a remote server, the new profile, including new desired pressures, being determined by the remote server based on past information and sleep therapy profiles from the first controller and from a plurality of other controllers associated with other sleep surfaces.

2. The bed system of claim 1 , wherein the sleep therapy profile includes a plurality of collections of desired pressures.

3. The bed system of claim 2 , wherein the first controller is further configured to select a particular one of the plurality of collections of desired pressure based on a sleep position of the user, for use in commanding the plurality of actuators to adjust the pressures.

4. The bed system of claim 2 , wherein the first controller is further configured to determine a sleep position of a user on the sleep surface based on the indications of pressure and at least one reference data pattern for the sleep position.

5. The bed system of claim 4 , wherein the first controller is further configured to select a particular one of the plurality of collections of desired pressures based on the determined sleep position of the user, for use in commanding the plurality of actuators to adjust the pressures.

6. The bed system of claim 2 , wherein the first controller is further configured to determine a sleep stage of a user on the sleep surface.

7. The bed system of claim 6 , wherein the first controller is further configured to select a particular one of the plurality of desired pressures based on the determined sleep stage of the user, for use in commanding the plurality of actuators to adjust the pressures.

8. The bed system of claim 7 , wherein the first controller is configured to determine the sleep stage of the user based on the indications of pressure.

9. The bed system of claim 7 , further comprising additional sensors and wherein the first controller is configured to determine the sleep stage of the user based on indications from the additional sensors.

10. The bed system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of actuators comprise valves.

11. The bed system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of actuators comprise a plurality of arrays of actuators.

12. The bed system of claim 11 , wherein actuators of a particular array of actuators are commonly controlled.

13. The bed system of claim 1 , wherein the remote server determines the new sleep therapy profile based on information from other controllers associated with sleep surfaces of users sharing a common characteristic with the user.

14. The bed system of claim 13 , wherein the common characteristic is personal user context information.

15. The bed system of claim 14 , wherein the personal user context information includes age, weight, and height.

16. The bed system of claim 1 , wherein the new sleep therapy profile is determined by selecting a profile that has resulted in improved sleep quality metric compared to the user's sleep quality metric of the existing sleep therapy profile.

17. The bed system of claim 16 , wherein sleep stage information is used to determine the sleep quality metric.

18. A bed system, comprising:

a sleep surface;

a plurality of sensors for providing pressure information for a plurality of different zones of the sleep surface;

a plurality of actuators to adjust pressures for the plurality of different zones of the sleep surface; and

a first controller configured to receive the pressure information and to command the plurality of actuators to adjust the pressures to desired pressure targets based on the pressure information and a sleep therapy profile for the user on the sleep surface, the sleep therapy profile specifying the desired pressures; and

the first controller connected to a remote server over a network which is configured to communicate with the user's personal smartphone and collect the user's feedback, the user's feedback used to determine the user's sleep quality score; and

the first controller configured to receive a new sleep therapy profile over the network from a remote server, the new profile, including new desired pressure targets, being determined by the remote server based on the selection of a sleep therapy profile that provided an improved sleep quality score based on past information and sleep therapy profiles from the first controller and from a plurality of other controllers associated with other sleep surfaces.
