Abstract

Systems and method for assisted catheter steering are provided. Instructions for steering a catheter within a patient are received. A graph defining paths between a plurality of configurations of a robotic catheter navigation system is constructed based on the received instructions. Each of the plurality of configurations are associated with a respective view of the patient. A path is determined in the graph to a target configuration of the plurality of configurations of the robotic catheter navigation system. The catheter is automatically steered within the patient based on the determined path in the graph to recover the respective view of the patient associated with the target configuration.

Claims (45)

1. A method comprising:

receiving instructions for steering a catheter within a patient;

transforming the received instructions into a configuration of a robotic catheter navigation system;

collecting ground truth positions of the catheter;

interpolating the ground truth positions of the catheter to generate unobserved positions of the catheter;

determining nearest positions between the ground truth positions and the unobserved positions;

generating a mapping function based on the determined nearest positions;

compensating the transformation based on the mapping function; and

applying the configuration to the robotic catheter navigation system to automatically steer the catheter within the patient.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the configuration defines a position and orientation of the catheter.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the position is defined by a translation parameter and the orientation is defined by rotation, anterior/posterior, and left/right parameters.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving instructions for steering a catheter within a patient comprises:

receiving the instructions in a coordinate system associated with the patient for steering the catheter.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein transforming the received instructions into a configuration of a robotic catheter navigation system comprises:

transforming the received instructions into the configuration of the robotic catheter navigation system based on a kinematics model of the catheter.

6. An apparatus comprising:

means for receiving instructions for steering a catheter within a patient;

means for transforming the received instructions into a configuration of a robotic catheter navigation system;

means for collecting ground truth positions of the catheter;

means for interpolating the ground truth positions of the catheter to generate unobserved positions of the catheter;

means for determining nearest positions between the ground truth positions and the unobserved positions;

means for generating a mapping function based on the determined nearest positions;

means for compensating the transformation based on the mapping function; and

means for applying the configuration to the robotic catheter navigation system to automatically steer the catheter within the patient.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the configuration defines a position and orientation of the catheter.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the position is defined by a translation parameter and the orientation is defined by rotation, anterior/posterior, and left/right parameters.

9. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing computer program instructions, the computer program instructions when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving instructions for steering a catheter within a patient;

transforming the received instructions into a configuration of a robotic catheter navigation system;

collecting ground truth positions of the catheter;

interpolating the ground truth positions of the catheter to generate unobserved positions of the catheter;

determining nearest positions between the ground truth positions and the unobserved positions;

generating a mapping function based on the determined nearest positions;

compensating the transformation based on the mapping function; and

applying the configuration to the robotic catheter navigation system to automatically steer the catheter within the patient.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein receiving instructions for steering a catheter within a patient comprises:

receiving the instructions in a coordinate system associated with the patient for steering the catheter.

11. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein transforming the received instructions into a configuration of a robotic catheter navigation system comprises:

transforming the received instructions into the configuration of the robotic catheter navigation system based on a kinematics model of the catheter.

12. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the means for receiving instructions for steering a catheter within a patient comprises:

means for receiving the instructions in a coordinate system associated with the patient for steering the catheter.

13. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the means for transforming the received instructions into a configuration of a robotic catheter navigation system comprises:

means for transforming the received instructions into the configuration of the robotic catheter navigation system based on a kinematics model of the catheter.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the configuration defines a position and orientation of the catheter.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the position is defined by a translation parameter and the orientation is defined by rotation, anterior/posterior, and left/right parameters.
