Abstract

Systems and methods for optimizing network microphone devices using noise classification are disclosed herein. In one example, individual microphones of a network microphone device (NMD) detect sound. The sound data is analyzed to detect a trigger event such as a wake word. Metadata associated with the sound data is captured in a lookback buffer of the NMD. After detecting the trigger event, the metadata is analyzed to classify noise in the sound data. Based on the classified noise, at least one performance parameter of the NMD is modified.

1. A playback device, comprising:

one or more processors;

one or more microphones;

a network interface; and

data storage having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the playback device to perform operations comprising:

detecting sound via the one or more microphones;

capturing first sound data based on the detected sound;

obtaining a first noise classification based on the first sound data;

determining a first modification of a wake-word sensitivity parameter based on the first noise classification;

applying the first modification of the wake-world sensitivity parameter to the playback device;

after obtaining the first noise classification, capturing second sound data based on the detected sound;

determining a second modification of the wake-world sensitivity parameter based on the second noise classification; and

applying the second modification of the wake-world sensitivity parameter to the playback device.

2. The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise increasing a playback volume based on the first noise classification, and decreasing the playback volume based on the second noise classification.

3. The playback device of claim 2 , wherein obtaining the first noise classification comprises identifying a first noise level, and wherein obtaining the second noise classification comprises identifying a second noise level lower than the first noise level.

4. The playback device of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the first noise classification comprises identifying a first noise source type, and wherein obtaining the second noise classification comprises identifying a second noise source type different from the first noise source type.

5. The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise, based on the first noise classification:

adjusting a playback volume of the playback device; or

modifying a noise-cancellation algorithm of the playback device.

6. The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise, based on the first noise classification, adjusting a gain applied to sound data during processing.

7. The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise, based on the first noise classification, modifying equalization settings for audio playback.

8. A method comprising:

detecting sound via one or more microphones of a playback device;

capturing first sound data based on the detected sound;

obtaining a first noise classification based on the first sound data;

determining a first modification of a wake-word sensitivity parameter based on the first noise classification;

applying the first modification of the wake-world sensitivity parameter to the playback device;

after obtaining the first noise classification, capturing second sound data based on the detected sound;

obtaining a second noise classification based on the second sound data;

determining a second modification of the wake-world sensitivity parameter based on the second noise classification; and

applying the second modification of the wake-world sensitivity parameter to the playback device.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising, based on the first noise classification, increasing a playback volume, and based on the second noise classification, decreasing the playback volume.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein obtaining the first noise classification comprises identifying a first noise level, and wherein obtaining the second noise classification comprises identifying a second noise level lower than the first noise level.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein obtaining the first noise classification comprises identifying a first noise source type, and wherein obtaining the second noise classification comprises identifying a second noise source type different from the first noise source type.
