Abstract

There is provided a glucose sensor system comprising: a transmitter ( 2 ) for containing a battery ( 212 ), the transmitter being for placement on top of patient skin; a transcutaneous connector ( 3 ) comprising at least one conductive path; and an implantable monolithic integrated circuit (I) for placement beneath the patient skin, wherein the implantable monolithic integrated circuit comprises a potentiostat and an electrochemical sensing element; wherein the potentiostat is electrically coupled to the transmitter ( 2 ) via the transcutaneous connector ( 3 ), and the electrochemical sensing element is configured to sense glucose concentration and generate an electrical signal representative of the glucose concentration, and wherein the potentiostat is electrically connected to the electrochemical sensing element.

Claims (16)

1. A continuous analyte monitoring system for a subject, comprising:

1) a device including:

A) a transmitter containing a battery, a temperature sensor, and a processor, said transmitter configured for placement on top of a skin of the subject;

B) a transcutaneous flexible printed circuit board with dimensions to fit within a 16 gauge or smaller needle comprising a first metal layer configured to route electrical signals;

C) a monolithic semiconductor chip configured for placement beneath the skin of the subject and containing an electrochemical sensing element comprising a conductor configured to sense analyte concentration and generate an electrical signal representative of the analyte concentration and a temperature sensor;

wherein said monolithic semiconductor chip is electrically coupled to the transmitter via the flexible printed circuit board;

wherein the device is configured to i) determine a temperature gradient between the transmitter temperature sensor and monolithic semiconductor chip temperature sensor, ii) determine if insertion is successful based on the gradient, and iii) calibrate the electrical signal representative of the analyte concentration based upon a temperature measurement from the monolithic semiconductor chip temperature sensor; and

2) an applicator configured to apply the device on the skin comprising a plastic body, and a needle for accommodating the monolithic semiconductor chip and at least a part of the printed circuit board attached to the monolithic semiconductor chip.

2. The continuous analyte monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the temperature sensor does not share a conductor with the electrochemical sensing element.

3. The continuous analyte monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the temperature sensor is a silicon-based bandgap temperature sensor.

4. The continuous analyte monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the temperature sensor contains at least one semiconductor junction.

5. The continuous analyte monitoring system of claim 4 , wherein the semiconductor junction may be a PN junction.

6. The continuous analyte sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the temperature sensor is implemented by a circuit that generates a current proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT).

7. The continuous analyte sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the temperature sensor is implemented by a circuit that generates a current complementary to absolute temperature (CTAT).

8. The continuous analyte sensor system of claim 1 , wherein the temperature sensor is implemented by a circuit that generates a current proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT) and a current complementary to absolute temperature (CTAT).

9. The continuous analyte monitoring system of claim 1 , in which the analyte is glucose.
