Abstract

A hammer drill comprises a drive mechanism including a spindle, a first ratchet coupled for co-rotation with the spindle, a second ratchet rotationally fixed to the housing, and a hammer lockout mechanism adjustable between a first mode and a second mode. The hammer drill further comprises a clutch adjustable between a first mode and a second mode. The hammer drill further comprises a detent radially movable between a locking position and an unlocking position, and a collar movable between a first rotational position in which the hammer lockout mechanism is in the first mode and a second rotational position in which the hammer lockout mechanism is in the second mode. In the first mode the detent is positioned such that the spindle is moveable relative to the housing. In the second mode the detent is positioned such that the spindle is prevented from moving relative to the housing.

Claims (47)

1. A hammer drill comprising:

a drive mechanism including an electric motor and a transmission;

a housing enclosing at least a portion of the drive mechanism;

a spindle rotatable in response to receiving torque from the drive mechanism;

a first ratchet coupled for co-rotation with the spindle;

a second ratchet rotationally fixed to the housing;

a hammer lockout mechanism adjustable between a first mode and a second mode, the hammer lockout mechanism including a detent radially movable between a locking position and an unlocking position; and

a collar rotatably coupled to the housing and movable between a first rotational position in which the hammer lockout mechanism is in the first mode and a second rotational position in which the hammer lockout mechanism is in the second mode,

wherein in the first mode, the detent is positioned such that the spindle is moveable relative to the housing in response to contact with a workpiece, causing the first and second ratchets to engage, and

wherein in the second mode, the detent is positioned in the locking position such that the spindle is prevented from moving relative to the housing in response to contact with a workpiece and a gap is maintained between the first and second ratchets.

2. The hammer drill of claim 1 , wherein the hammer lockout mechanism includes an aperture in the housing, and wherein the detent is disposed within the aperture.

3. The hammer drill of claim 1 , wherein the collar includes a recess, and wherein the detent is aligned with the recess in the first mode.

4. The hammer drill of claim 3 , wherein the collar includes a protrusion, and wherein the detent is aligned with the protrusion in the second mode.

5. The hammer drill of claim 1 , wherein the locking position of the detent is positioned radially inwards relative to the unlocking position of the detent.

6. A hammer drill comprising:

a drive mechanism including an electric motor and a transmission;

a housing enclosing at least a portion of the drive mechanism;

a spindle rotatable in response to receiving torque from the drive mechanism;

a first ratchet coupled for co-rotation with the spindle;

a second ratchet rotationally fixed to the housing;

a hammer lockout mechanism adjustable between a first mode and a second mode, the hammer lockout mechanism including a plurality of detents, each of which is radially movable between a locking position and an unlocking position; and

a collar rotatably coupled to the housing and movable between a first rotational position in which the hammer lockout mechanism is in the first mode and a second rotational position in which the hammer lockout mechanism is in the second mode,

wherein in the first mode, the detents are positioned such that the spindle is moveable relative to the housing in response to contact with a workpiece, causing the first and second ratchets to engage, and

wherein in the second mode, the detents are positioned in the locking position such that the spindle is prevented from moving relative to the housing in response to contact with a workpiece and a gap is maintained between the first and second ratchets.

7. The hammer drill of claim 6 , wherein the housing further comprises a plurality of apertures in which the detents are respectively received.

8. The hammer drill of claim 7 , wherein the collar includes a plurality of recesses, and wherein the detents are aligned with the respective recesses in the first mode.

9. The hammer drill of claim 8 , wherein the collar further includes a plurality of protrusions, and wherein the detents are aligned with the respective protrusions in the second mode.

10. The hammer drill of claim 6 , wherein the locking position of each the detents is positioned radially inwards relative to the unlocking position of the detents.

11. A hammer drill comprising:

a drive mechanism including an electric motor and a transmission;

a housing enclosing at least a portion of the drive mechanism;

a spindle rotatable in response to receiving torque from the drive mechanism, the spindle being selectively axially movable relative to the housing;

a first ratchet coupled for co-rotation with the spindle and axially movable with the spindle relative to the housing;

a second ratchet axially and rotationally fixed to the housing;

a hammer lockout mechanism adjustable between a first mode and a second mode, the hammer lockout mechanism including a detent radially movable between a locking position and an unlocking position; and

a collar rotatably coupled to the housing and movable between a first rotational position in which the hammer lockout mechanism is in the first mode and a second rotational position in which the hammer lockout mechanism is in the second mode,

wherein in the first mode, the detent is positioned such that the spindle is axially moveable relative to the housing in response to contact with a workpiece, causing the first and second ratchets to engage, and

wherein in the second mode, the detent is positioned in the locking position such that the spindle is prevented from axially moving relative to the housing in response to contact with a workpiece and a gap is maintained between the first and second ratchets.

12. The hammer drill of claim 11 , wherein the hammer lockout mechanism includes an aperture in the housing, and wherein the detent is disposed within the aperture.

13. The hammer drill of claim 12 , wherein the collar includes a recess, and wherein the detent is aligned with the recess in the first mode.

14. The hammer drill of claim 13 , wherein the collar includes a protrusion, and wherein the detent is aligned with the protrusion in the second mode.

15. The hammer drill of claim 11 , further comprising a bearing rotatably supporting the spindle and axially fixed relative to the spindle.

16. The hammer drill of claim 15 , wherein, when the detent is in the locking position, the detent engages an outer race of the bearing.

17. The hammer drill of claim 16 , further comprising a second bearing rotatably supporting the spindle, the second bearing axially fixed relative to the housing.

18. The hammer drill of claim 17 , wherein the second ratchet is positioned between the first ratchet and the second bearing.

19. The hammer drill of claim 11 , wherein the locking position of the detent is positioned radially inwards relative to the unlocking position of the detent.

20. The hammer drill of claim 11 , wherein the hammer lockout mechanism includes a plurality of detents.
