Abstract

Systems and methods for creating a database of geofences and registering geofences, with each geofence in the database being associated with an IP address, preferably an IPV6 address. Each geofence is defined using at least one geographic designator, preferably real property boundaries. Entitlements can be associated with geofences relating to permissive and prohibitive activities within the geofences.

Claims (38)

1. A method for looking up geofences in a geofence database comprising:

determining a geographic location;

identifying a geofence associated with the geographic location in the geofence database, wherein boundaries of the geofence are defined by a plurality of geographic designators;

determining a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with at least one of the plurality of geographic designators;

verifying metadata associated with the unique IP address, wherein the metadata includes at least one class or at least one entitlement and at least one owner associated with the geofence or at least one licensee of the geofence;

enabling or disabling network functionality and/or usage of at least one application for a mobile device including a processor and a memory within the geofence based on the at least one class or the at least one entitlement; and

wherein the unique IP address is an IP version 6 (IPv6) address.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the geofence associated with the geographic location in the geofence database is automatically performed by the mobile device upon the mobile device coming within a physical proximity of the geographic location.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the unique IP address is an anchor point of the geofence.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the anchor point of the geofence is a unique identifier of the geofence.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one class determines a precedence of the geofence in relation to an overlapping geofence.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the geofence is a mobile geofence.

7. A system for looking up geofences in a geofence database comprising:

a server including at least one processor, a memory, and a geofence database; and

a mobile device including a processor and a memory;

wherein the mobile device is operable to determine a geographic location and communicate the geographic location over at least one network to the server;

wherein the server is operable to identify a geofence associated with the geographic location in the geofence database, wherein boundaries of the geofence are defined by a plurality of geographic designators;

wherein a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with at least one of the plurality of geographic designators is operable to be determined;

wherein metadata associated with the unique IP address is operable to be verified, wherein the metadata includes at least one class or at least one entitlement and at least one owner associated with the geofence or at least one of licensee of the geofence;

wherein the mobile device is enabled or disabled for network functionality and/or usage of at least one application within the geofence based on the at least one class or the at least one entitlement; and

wherein the unique IP address is an IP version 6 (IPv6) address.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the geofence associated with the geographic location in the geofence database is automatically identified by the mobile device upon the mobile device coming within a physical proximity of the geographic location.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the unique IP address is an anchor point of the geofence.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the anchor point of the geofence is a unique identifier of the geofence.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the at least one class determines a precedence of the geofence in relation to an overlapping geofence.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein the geofence is a mobile geofence.

13. An apparatus for looking up geofences in a geofence database comprising:

a server including at least one processor, a memory, and the geofence database, wherein the geofence database includes a geofence;

wherein the server is in network communication with a mobile device operable to determine a geographic location and communicate the geographic location over at least one network to the server;

wherein the server is operable to identify a geofence associated with the geographic location in the geofence database, wherein boundaries of the geofence are defined by a plurality of geographic designators;

wherein a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with at least one of the plurality of geographic designators is operable to be determined;

wherein metadata associated with the unique IP address is operable to be verified, and wherein the metadata includes at least one class or at least one entitlement and at least one owner associated with the geofence or at least one licensee of the geofence;

wherein the mobile device is enabled or disabled for network functionality and/or usage of at least one application within the geofence based on the at least one class or the at least one entitlement; and

wherein the unique IP address is an IP version 6 (IPv6) address.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the geofence associated with the geographic location in the geofence database is automatically identified by the mobile device upon the mobile device coming within a physical proximity of the geographic location.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the unique IP address is an anchor point of the geofence.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the at least one class determines a precedence of the geofence in relation to an overlapping geofence.

17. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the geofence is a mobile geofence.
