Abstract

An apparatus includes a cannula assembly, a housing, a fluid reservoir, a flow control mechanism, and an actuator. The housing includes an inlet port removably coupled to the cannula assembly and defines an inner volume. The fluid reservoir is fluidically coupled to the housing and configured to receive and isolate a volume of bodily fluid from a patient. The flow control mechanism is at least partially disposed in the inner volume. The actuator is operably coupled to the flow control mechanism and is configured to move the flow control mechanism between a first configuration, in which bodily fluid can flow, via a fluid flow path defined by the flow control mechanism, from the cannula assembly, through the inlet port and into the fluid reservoir, to a second configuration, in which the fluid reservoir is fluidically isolated from the cannula assembly.

Claims (42)

1. A fluid transfer device, comprising:

a first port configured to be fluidically coupled to a patient;

a second port configured to be fluidically coupled to an external fluid reservoir;

a valve;

a seal; and

a channel between the first port and the seal, the channel configured to contain a first volume of fluid received from the patient;

the valve in an open state and the seal configured collectively to allow at least a portion of the first volume of fluid to flow from the first port toward at least one of the valve or the seal,

the valve configured to transition to a closed state when at least the portion of the first volume of fluid is contained in the channel,

the valve in the closed state and the seal configured collectively to allow a second volume of fluid to flow through a fluid flow path that bypasses the channel and the first volume of fluid contained therein.

2. The fluid transfer device of claim 1 , wherein the valve in the open state is configured to allow at least a portion of the first volume of fluid to flow past the valve and toward the seal.

3. The fluid transfer device of claim 1 , wherein the first port and the second port define at least a portion of the fluid flow path.

4. The fluid transfer device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a housing that at least partially houses the seal, the channel, and the valve.

5. The fluid transfer device of claim 4 , wherein the first port is disposed on a distal side of the housing and the second port is disposed on a proximal side of the housing.

6. The fluid transfer device of claim 1 , wherein the valve in the closed state and the seal configured collectively to contain the first volume of fluid in the channel.

7. The fluid transfer device of claim 1 , wherein the valve is configured to transition to the closed state in response to an equalization of pressure between at least a portion of the channel and a portion of the patient to which the first port is fluidically coupled.

8. A method, comprising:

establishing fluid communication between a patient and a port of a fluid transfer device, the fluid transfer device including a seal, the seal in a first state when establishing fluid communication;

receiving a first volume of fluid from the patient into a first channel of the fluid transfer device via the port, the first channel between the port and the seal, the fluid transfer device including a valve along the first channel, the valve being in an open state during the receiving of the first volume of fluid; and

after at least a portion of the first volume of fluid is contained in the first channel, receiving a second volume of fluid into a second channel of the fluid transfer device, the seal in a second state and the valve in a closed state during the receiving of the second volume of fluid.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the receiving the first volume of fluid includes receiving the first volume of fluid into the first channel until substantial equalization of pressure between at least a portion of the first channel and a portion of the patient.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the valve is configured to transition from the open state to the closed state in response to the substantial equalization of pressure.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the valve is configured to transition from the open state in which the first volume of fluid is allowed to flow from the patient into the first channel, to the closed state in which the first volume of fluid is prevented from flowing out of the first channel.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first channel and the second channel are disposed in a housing of the fluid transfer device.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the valve in the closed state and the seal in the second state configured collectively to contain the first volume of fluid in the first channel, and

the receiving the second volume of fluid into the second channel includes receiving the second volume of fluid into the second channel while bypassing the first channel and the first volume of fluid contained therein.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the port is a first port, the fluid transfer device including a second port configured to be fluidically coupled to an external fluid reservoir, the second channel defining at least a portion of a fluid flow path between the first port and the second port.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

fluidically coupling the second port to an external fluid reservoir after receiving the first volume of fluid and before receiving the second volume of fluid.

16. A method, comprising:

establishing fluid communication between a patient and a port of a fluid transfer device, the fluid transfer device including a seal, the seal being in a first state when establishing fluid communication;

receiving a first volume of fluid from the patient into a first channel of the fluid transfer device via the port, the first channel including a valve seat and a valve and in communication with the seal, the valve being in an open state during the receiving of the first volume of fluid; and

receiving a second volume of fluid into a second channel of the fluid transfer device after pressure equalizes between at least a portion of the first channel and a portion of the patient, the seal in a second state and the valve in a closed state during the receiving of the second volume of fluid such that the second volume of fluid bypasses the first channel and the first volume of fluid contained therein.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the valve is configured to transition from the open state in which the first volume of fluid is allowed to flow from the patient into the first channel, to the closed state in which the first volume of fluid is prevented from flowing out of the first channel.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the valve is configured to transition to the closed state and the seal is configured to transition to the second state after at least a portion of the first volume of fluid is contained in the first channel.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first channel and the second channel are disposed in a housing of the fluid transfer device.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the valve in the closed state and the seal in the second state are configured collectively to contain the first volume of fluid in the first channel.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the port is a first port, the fluid transfer device including a second port configured to be fluidically coupled to an external fluid reservoir, the second channel defining at least a portion of a fluid flow path between the first port and the second port.

22. The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

fluidically coupling the second port to an external fluid reservoir after receiving the first volume of fluid and before receiving the second volume of fluid.

23. The method of claim 17 , the valve is configured to transition from the open state to the closed state in response to the pressure equalizing.

24. The method of claim 17 , wherein the valve is configured to transition from the open state to the closed state when the seal is in the second state.
