Abstract

A technique is described for converting a variety of video streams from transmission sources into a single designated video stream on a client device. As an example, a converter device may receive video streams from multiple transmission sources and select the video stream to convert and output on a client device based on the signal quality. In some examples, the converter device may switch between transmission sources. The converter device may measure the time offset between the video streams of the transmission sources and buffer one of the video streams to align the timing of the video streams, so the user does not detect a timing delay while viewing the video content.

Claims (56)

1. A method comprising:

outputting, on a display communicatively coupled to a multi-mode conversion device, a first video stream of media content from a first video source;

determining at least one parameter of the first video stream is below a threshold;

in response to determining the at least one parameter is below the threshold determining a second video stream of the media content from a second video source;

buffering the second video stream to synchronize output timing of the media content from the second video stream with output timing of the media content from the first video stream;

outputting, on the display, the second video stream of the media content from the second video source;

detecting a failure of the second video stream; and

in response to detecting the failure, switching from the second video stream to a third video stream from a third video source.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

measuring a time offset between the first video stream and the second video stream; and

buffering the second video stream based on the time offset.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

generating a forward-looking time coordinated conversion between the first video stream and the second video stream based on the time offset.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a signal quality or a signal strength associated with the first video stream and the second video stream.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

tagging the first video stream as a transmission source to identify a point of reference to determine a time offset between the first video stream and the second video stream.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first video stream and the second video stream are compliant with at least one distribution protocol selected from a group of protocols consisting of an advanced television system committee (ATSC) protocol, an over the top (OTT) protocol, a digital video broadcasting (DVB) protocol, a satellite protocol, a fifth-generation mobile network protocol.

7. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computing system, cause the computing system to perform operations comprising:

outputting, on a display communicatively coupled to a multi-mode conversion device, a first video stream of media content from a first video source;

determining at least one parameter of the first video stream is below a threshold;

in response to determining the at least one parameter is below the threshold determining a second video stream of the media content from a second video source;

buffering the second video stream to synchronize output timing of the media content from the second video stream with output timing of the media content from the first video stream;

outputting, on the display, the second video stream of the media content from the second video source;

detecting a failure of the second video stream; and

in response to detecting the failure, switching from the second video stream to a third video stream from a third video source.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the operations further comprise:

measuring a time offset between the first video stream and the second video stream; and

buffering the second video stream based on the time offset.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise:

generating a forward-looking time coordinated conversion between the first video stream and the second video stream based on the time offset.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the operations further comprise:

determining a signal quality or a signal strength associated with the first video stream and the second video stream.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the operations further comprise:

tagging the first video stream as a transmission source to identify a point of reference to determine a time offset between the first video stream and the second video stream.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the first video stream and the second video stream are compliant with at least one distribution protocol selected from a group of protocols consisting of an advanced television system committee (ATSC) protocol, an over the top (OTT) protocol, a digital video broadcasting (DVB) protocol, a satellite protocol, a fifth-generation mobile network protocol.

13. A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more memories storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to perform a process comprising:

outputting, on a display communicatively coupled to a multi-mode conversion device, a first video stream of media content from a first video source;

determining at least one parameter of the first video stream is below a threshold;

in response to determining the at least one parameter is below the threshold determining a second video stream of the media content from a second video source;

buffering the second video stream to synchronize output timing of the media content from the second video stream with output timing of the media content from the first video stream;

outputting, on the display, the second video stream of the media content from the second video source;

detecting a failure of the second video stream; and

in response to detecting the failure, switching from the second video stream to a third video stream from a third video source.

14. The system according to claim 13 , wherein the process further comprises:

measuring a time offset between the first video stream and the second video stream; and

buffering the second video stream based on the time offset.

15. The system according to claim 14 , wherein the process further comprises:

generating a forward-looking time coordinated conversion between the first video stream and the second video stream based on the time offset.
