Abstract

An optical plastic film can suppress rainbow unevenness when viewed with naked eyes and blackout when viewed with polarized sunglasses without high in-plane retardation. The film has an average of in-plane retardations of 600 nm or less and satisfies: when a sample with a size of 50 mm in length×50 mm in width is cut out of the film, slow axis directions are measured at a total of five points including four points 10 mm advanced from the four corners of the sample toward the center and the center of the sample, and angles formed by any one side of the sample with the slow axis directions at the measurement points are respectively defined as D1 to D5, the difference between the maximum value and the minimum value of D1 to D5 is 5.0 degrees or more.

Claims (37)

1. A biaxially oriented ployethylene terephthalate optical film satisfying the following conditions 1 and 2:

Condition 1

when a sample with a size of 50 mm in length×50 mm in width is cut out of the film, in-plane retardations are measured at a total of five points, including four points 10 mm advanced from the four corners of the sample toward the center and the other point located at the center of the sample, and the in-plane retardations at the five points are defined, respectively, as Re1, Re2, Re3, Re4, and Re5, the average of Re1 to Re5 is 600 nm or less; and

Condition 2

when the slow axis directions of the sample are measured at the five points, and angles formed by any one side of the sample with the slow axis directions at each of the five points are defined respectively as D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5, the difference between the maximum value of D1 to D5 and the minimum value of D1 to D5 is 5.0 degrees or more, wherein

(a) if the optical film is in the form of a sheet and multiple samples of 50 mm (length)× 50 mm (width) can be taken from the sheet, at least 50% of the samples taken satisfy Condition 1and Condition 2, and

(b) if the optical film is in the form of a roll and multiple samples of 50 mm (length)×50 mm (width) can be taken from the roll, at leat 50% of the samples taken satisfy Condition 1and Condition 2.

2. The optical film according to claim 1 , further satisfying the following condition 3:

<Condition 3

when retardations in the thickness direction of the sample at the five points are defined respectively as Rth1, Rth2, Rth3, Rth4, and Rth5, the average of Re1/Rth1, Re2/Rth2, Re3/Rth3, Re4/Rth4, and Re5/Rth5 is 0.10 or less.

3. The optical film according to claim 1 , further satisfying the following condition 4:

Condition 4

when the retardations in the thickness direction of the sample at the five points are defined respectively as Rth1, Rth2, Rth3, Rth4, and Rth5, the average of Rth1 to Rth5 is 2000 nm or more.

4. A polarizing plate comprising:

a polarizer;

a transparent protective plate A disposed on one side of the polarizer; and

a transparent protective plate B disposed on the other side of the polarizer, wherein

at least one selecting from the group consisting of the transparent protective plate A and the transparent protective plate B is the optical film according to claim 1 .

5. An image display device comprising:

a display element; and

a film disposed on the light emitting surface side of the display element, wherein

the film is the optical film according to claim 1 .

6. The image display device according to claim 5 , further comprising a polarizer between the display element and the film.

7. The optical film according to claim 1 , wherein for (a) and (b) at least 70% of the samples taken satisfy Condition 1 and Condition 2.

8. The optical film according to claim 1 , wherein for (a) and (b) at least 90% of the samples taken satisfy Condition 1 and Condition 2.

9. The optical film according to claim 1 , wherein for (a) and (b) 100% of the samples taken satisfy Condition 1 and Condition 2.

10. The optical film according to claim 1 , wherein the average of Re1 to Re5 is 50 nm or more.

11. The optical film according to claim 1 , wherein each of Re1 to Re5 is 600 nm or less.

12. The optical film according to claim 1 , wherein the difference between the maximum and minimum values of Re1 to Re5 is 200 nm or less.

13. The optical film according to claim 1 , wherein the difference between the maximum and minimum values of D1 to D5 is 6.0 degrees or more and 20.0 degrees or less.

14. The optical film according to claim 1 , wherein the difference between the maximum and minimum values of D1 to D5 is 8.0 degrees or more and 17.0 degrees or less.

15. The optical film according to claim 1 , wherein the difference between the maximum and minimum values of D1 to D5 is 10.0 degrees or more and 15.0 degrees or less.
