Abstract

A method for detecting biometric parameters includes the steps of performing a bone graft procedure on at least one vertebra of a spine, providing at least one biometric sensor at the at least one vertebra, the sensor measuring at least one parameter selected from the group consisting of pressure, tension, shear, relative position, and vascular flow in an adjacent surrounding, and measuring the at least one biometric parameter at the vertebra with the sensor.

Claims (31)

1. A tibial implant configured to be positioned at a proximal portion of a tibia and at least partially within the tibia, the tibial implant comprising:

a body configured to couple to the tibia; and

a sensor system positioned in the body, the sensor system being configured to (i) monitor at least one biometric parameter and (ii) wirelessly communicate with a processing system outside of the tibia;

wherein:

the sensor system is configured to (i) measure motion of the tibial implant, (ii) measure relative position of the tibial implant, (iii) identify if a contact region is outside a predetermined area, and (iv) provide an indication of a degree of misalignment based on the identification of the contact region being outside the predetermined area.

2. The tibial implant of claim 1 , further comprising an activation system configured to post-operatively activate the sensor system at predetermined times.

3. The tibial implant of claim 1 , wherein the sensor system further comprises a battery.

4. The tibial implant of claim 1 , wherein the sensor system is configured to measure at least one of: bone density, fluid viscosity, strain, pressure, load, angular deformity, vibration, tilt of the tibial implant, stability, or vascular flow.

5. The tibial implant of claim 1 , wherein the processing system is configured to display the measured motion on an electronic display by visualizing a knee-joint in a three-dimensional model, and wherein the processing system is configured to include the tibial implant in the three-dimensional model of the measured motion.

6. The tibial implant of claim 1 , wherein the at least one biometric parameter includes load and/or pressure, and the processing system is configured to determine, using the measured load and/or pressure, a position and/or a wear of the tibial implant.

7. The tibial implant of claim 1 , further comprising a battery configured to post-operatively power the sensor system, wherein the sensor system is configured to post-operatively monitor the at least one biometric parameter at predetermined times.

8. A tibial sensor assembly configured for positioning within a proximal portion of a tibia, the tibial sensor assembly comprising:

a plurality of sensors configured to postoperatively measure at least one biometric parameter,

wherein the at least one biometric parameter includes relative position, motion, and load, and

wherein the tibial sensor assembly is configured to (i) identify if the at least one biometric parameter exceeds a pre-defined threshold and (ii) perform a secondary action if the at least one biometric parameter exceeds the pre-defined threshold, wherein the secondary action is configured to aid in readjusting an alignment or a modularity of an implant.

9. The tibial sensor assembly of claim 8 , wherein a control circuit is configured to communicate with a processing system outside of the tibia, the processing system being configured to display the measured at least one biometric parameter in a three-dimensional model, and wherein the secondary action further includes at least one of: releasing a medication or communicating additional information related to the at least one biometric parameter.

10. The tibial sensor assembly of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of sensors includes a first sensor positioned in a tibial implant and a second sensor positioned in a femoral implant.

11. The tibial sensor assembly of claim 8 , further comprising a tibial implant, wherein the plurality of sensors are implanted in or attached to the tibial implant.

12. The tibial sensor assembly of claim 8 , wherein a control circuit is configured to communicate with a processing system outside of the tibia, the processing system being configured to output an analysis of an implant and/or patient health.

13. The tibial sensor assembly of claim 8 , wherein the at least one biometric parameter includes stability and/or angular deformity.

14. The tibial sensor assembly of claim 8 , wherein the at least one biometric parameter includes torque and/or vibration.

15. A tibial implant configured to be positioned at a proximal portion of a tibia and at least partially within the tibia, the tibial implant comprising:

a body assembly configured to couple to the tibia, the body assembly comprising:

a sensor system configured to post-operatively monitor at least one biometric parameter, wherein the at least one biometric parameter includes friction, wherein the sensor system determines implant wear based on the friction;

a power source including a battery configured to post-operatively power the sensor system; and

an activation system configured to activate the sensor at predetermined times.

16. The tibial implant of claim 15 , wherein the sensor system comprises a plurality of sensors positioned within or proximate to a tibial stem portion of the body assembly.

17. The tibial implant of claim 15 , wherein the at least one biometric parameter includes relative position of the tibial implant, and wherein the determination of implant wear is further based on the relative position.

18. The tibial implant of claim 15 , further comprising a processing unit, wherein the processing unit is configured to output one or more alarms based on the monitored biometric parameter.

19. The tibial implant of claim 15 , wherein the sensor system is implanted in or attached to the body.

20. The tibial implant of claim 15 , wherein the activation system uses radio frequency energy, electromagnetic energy, or ultrasonic energy.
