Abstract

A power tool is provided including a housing having an elongated body having an outer diameter that is at most approximately 34 mm, and an outer-rotor electric motor disposed within the elongated body of the housing. The electric motor is configured to provide a maximum power output of approximately greater than or equal to 470 watts and a maximum output speed of greater than 25,000 rotations-per-minutes (RPM) when powered by the battery pack having a maximum rated voltage of 20V and rated capacity of 2 Amp-hours.

Claims (42)

1. A power tool comprising:

a housing having an elongated body having an outer diameter that is at most approximately 34 mm;

an electric motor disposed within the elongated body of the housing;

a battery receptacle provided at a rear end of the housing configured to receive a removable battery pack to power the electric motor; and

an output spindle driven by the electric motor forward of the elongated body,

wherein the electric motor comprises:

a rotor shaft on which a first motor bearing and a second motor bearing are mounted configured to drive the output spindle;

a stator assembly including a stator core having an aperture extending therethrough, a plurality of stator teeth radially extending outwardly from the stator core, and a plurality of stator windings wound around the plurality of stator teeth;

a stator mount including a main body that is fixedly secured relative to the housing and an elongated cylindrical member projecting axially from the main body at least partially into the aperture of the stator core;

an outer rotor comprising a cylindrical rotor core supporting at least one permanent magnet around an outer surface of the stator core; and

a rotor mount including an outer body arranged to couple to the outer rotor and an inner body mounted on the rotor shaft;

wherein the electric motor is configured to provide a maximum power output of approximately greater than or equal to 470 watts and a maximum output speed of greater than 25,000 rotations-per-minutes (RPM) when powered by the battery pack having a maximum rated voltage of 20V and rated capacity of 2 Amp-hours.

2. The power tool of claim 1 , wherein the main body of the stator mount forms a bearing pocket that supports the first motor bearing on a first side of the stator assembly, and the second motor bearing is supported on a second side of the stator assembly, wherein the rotor shaft extends through the aperture of the stator core.

3. The power tool of claim 2 , further comprising an intermediate bearing received at least partially within the aperture of the stator core to radially support the stator core relative to the rotor shaft.

4. The power tool of claim 3 , wherein the intermediate bearing abuts an end of the elongated cylindrical member of the stator mount within the aperture of the stator core.

5. The power tool of claim 1 , wherein a ratio of the maximum power output of the electric motor to a total weight of the power tool is approximately 200 to 230 watts per pound.

6. The power tool of claim 1 , wherein the housing further includes a main body located at a front end of the housing forward of the elongated body, wherein the main body includes a larger diameter than the elongated body.

7. The power tool of claim 6 , further comprising a first fan formed in the rotor assembly and having a first diameter, and a second fan mounted on the output spindle within the main body and having a second diameter that is greater than the first diameter.

8. The power tool of claim 1 , when the battery pack outputs a maximum rated voltage of approximately 12 volts and a rated capacity of 2 Ampere-hours, the electric motor produces a maximum power output of at least 340 watts and the power tool has a power-to-weight ratio of at least 200 watts per pounds.

9. The power tool of claim 1 , wherein the girth of the elongated body is less than or equal to 34 mm.

10. The power tool of claim 1 , wherein the output spindle supports a tool holder at the front end of the housing, and wherein a length of the pool tool from a front portion of the tool holder to a rear portion of the battery receptacle is less than or equal to 250 mm.

11. A power tool comprising:

a housing having an elongated body having an outer diameter that is at most approximately 34 mm;

an electric motor disposed within the elongated body of the housing;
