Abstract

A label switching router for a switching network configured for source routing can be configured to modify one or more reported properties of a link associated with that router based on one or more link quality metrics. For example, a router can include a link with available bandwidth of 10 Gbps, a value that can be used by a headend when evaluating nodes of the network against a set of constraints required by a particular requested connection or tunnel. A link of that router may exhibit an increased bit error rate which can be used by the label switching router to artificially deflate available bandwidth, thereby reducing the number of label switching paths including the router are selected by the headend.

Claims (42)

1. A machine-implemented method performed within a switching network to select a routing path through a set of transit nodes from a headend to an egress router, the method comprising:

determining, by a first transit node of the switching network, that a bit error rate, a dropped frame rate, or a frame error rate of a link between the first transit node and a second transit node of the switching network has increased above a threshold;

decreasing a reported available bandwidth of the link, the reported available bandwidth being a value that is reported and is independent of an actual available bandwidth of the link;

generating a message into the switching network, the message comprising the reported available bandwidth; and

biasing an internal meter associated with the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate of the link coupling the first transit node to the second transit node, wherein the internal meter is an internal meter of the first transit node.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining whether to generate an additional message when the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate of the link between the first transit node and the second transit node of the switching network is equal to or below an additional threshold.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining whether to omit generating the additional message when the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate of the link between the first transit node and the second transit node of the switching network is above an additional threshold.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate has decreased below the threshold; and

increasing the reported available bandwidth of the link.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising generating an additional message into the switching network that indicates that the reported available bandwidth of the link has increased.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate has increased above an additional threshold; and

decreasing the reported available bandwidth of the link.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising generating an additional message into the switching network that indicates that the reported available bandwidth of the link has decreased.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold is a percentage change.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the threshold is an absolute value change.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting the message to a traffic engineering database.

11. A label switching router comprising:

a nonvolatile memory storing instructions; a working memory; and

a processor coupled to the nonvolatile memory and the working memory and configured to access the nonvolatile memory to retrieve the instructions and, in response, instantiate into the working memory an instance of a network service application, the network service application configured to:

upon determining that a bit error rate, a dropped frame rate, or a frame error rate of a link coupling the label switching router to a transit node has increased above a threshold:

decrease a reported available bandwidth of the link, the reported available bandwidth being a value that is reported and is independent of an actual available bandwidth of the link; and

generate a message into a switching network, the message comprising the reported available bandwidth;

maintain an internal meter associated with the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate of the link coupling the label switching router to the transit node; and

bias the internal meter.

12. The label switching router of claim 11 , wherein the network service application is further configured to determine to omit generating an additional message when the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate of the link between a first transit node and a second transit node of the switching network is above an additional threshold.

13. The label switching router of claim 11 , wherein the network service application is further configured to determine to generate an additional message into the switching network when the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate of the link between the first transit node and the second transit node of the switching network is equal to or below an additional threshold.

14. The label switching router of claim 11 , wherein the network service application is further configured to:

determine that the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate has decreased below the threshold; and

increase the reported available bandwidth of the link.

15. A computer program product stored in a non-transitory storage medium comprising:

instructions executable by a processor to select a routing path through a set of transit nodes from a headend to an egress router by:

determining, by a first transit node of a switching network, that a bit error rate, a dropped frame rate, or a frame error rate of a link between the first transit node and a second transit node of the switching network has increased above a threshold;

decreasing a reported available bandwidth of the link, the reported available bandwidth being a value that is reported and is independent of an actual available bandwidth of the link;

generating a message into the switching network, the message comprising the reported available bandwidth; and

biasing an internal meter associated with the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate of the link coupling the first transit node to the second transit node, wherein the internal meter is an internal meter of the first transit node.

16. The computer program product of claim 15 , the instructions are further executable by the processor to:

determine that the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate has increased above an additional threshold; and

decrease the reported available bandwidth of the link.

17. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further executable by the processor to determine to generate an additional message into the switching network when the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate of the link between the first transit node and the second transit node of the switching network is equal to or below an additional threshold.

18. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further executable by the processor to determine to omit generating an additional message when the bit error rate, the dropped frame rate, or the frame error rate of the link between the first transit node and the second transit node of the switching network is above an additional threshold.
