Abstract

A multifiber connector for passing pre-connectorized fiber optic cable through microduct includes an engagement portion that is configured to hold a ferrule that is configured to terminate a fiber optic cable and a receiving portion that is configured to receive the engagement portion. The engagement portion includes a base portion having a length in a longitudinal direction of the engagement portion and an outer periphery portion that extends in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction of the engagement portion. The receiving portion is configured to receive the engagement portion and is shaped to minimize an outer periphery portion of the receiving portion in the transverse direction such that a plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the connector are configured to pass through a micro-duct that is configured to be installed in a duct having a diameter of at least 25 mm.

Claims (53)

1. A pre-connectorized multifiber connector for passing pre-connectorized fiber optic cable through micro-duct comprising:

a plurality of ferrules that are each configured to terminate one of a plurality of fiber optic cables;

a plurality of ferrule holders that are configured to hold one of the plurality of ferrules;

a ferrule cap configured to receive the plurality of ferrule holders;

wherein each of the plurality of ferrule holders includes a base portion and a stem portion that is configured to extend rearward from the base portion in a longitudinal direction;

wherein an outer periphery of the base portion in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction includes two flat portions spaced apart from one another about the outer periphery;

wherein first ends of the two flat portions that are nearest to one another along the outer periphery of the base portion are connected to one another by a first curved portion, two second curved portions extend from second ends of the two flat portions that are furthest from one another along the outer periphery of the base portion, and a third curved portion connects the two second curved portions;

wherein the ferrule cap includes channels configured to receive the plurality of ferrules with one of the two flat portions of a first one of the plurality of ferrule holders located adjacent to one of the two flat portions of a second one of the plurality of ferrule holders so as to minimize an outer periphery of the cap in the transverse direction so as to configure the connector device, and a plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the plurality of ferrule holders, to be passed through a micro-duct that is configured to be installed in a duct having a diameter of at least 25 mm; and

wherein the micro-duct is configured to prevent a plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with a circular outer periphery portioned connector that includes a circular outer periphery portion that extends in a direction transverse to a longitudinal direction of the circular outer periphery portioned connector from being passed through the micro-duct.

2. The connector of claim 1 , further comprising a retaining member having a front end portion that is configured to hold one of the plurality of ferrule holders and a rear end portion that is configured to receive one of the plurality of fiber optic cables.

3. The connector of claim 1 , further comprising a boot that is configured to be coupled with the retaining member.

4. The connector of claim 1 , further comprising an outer housing that is configured to be coupled with one of the plurality of ferrule holders.

5. The connector of claim 4 , wherein the outer housing is configured to be coupled with the one of the plurality of ferrule holders after the one of the plurality of ferrule holders is passed through the micro-duct.

6. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the micro-duct has a diameter of about 3 mm to about 16 mm.

7. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule cap is configured so as to push the connector device and the plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the plurality of ferrule holders through the micro-duct.

8. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule cap is configured so as to pull the connector device and the plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the plurality of ferrule holders through the micro-duct.

9. A pre-connectorized multifiber connector for passing pre-connectorized fiber optic cable through micro-duct comprising:

a ferrule holder portion that is configured to hold a ferrule that is configured to terminate a fiber optic cable;

a cap portion that is configured to receive the ferrule holder portion;

wherein the ferrule holder portion includes a base portion and a stem portion that is configured to extend rearward from the base portion in a longitudinal direction;

wherein an outer periphery of the base portion in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction includes a flat portion;

wherein the flat portion includes two flat portions having first ends that are nearest to one another along the outer periphery connected to one another by a first curved portion, and wherein two second curved portions extend from second ends of the two flat portions that are furthest from one another along the outer periphery of the base portion; and

wherein the cap portion includes an engagement portion that is configured to receive the ferrule holder portion so as to minimize an outer periphery of the cap portion in the transverse direction and configure the connector and a plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the ferrule holder portion through a micro-duct that is configured to be installed in a duct having a diameter of at least 25 mm.

The connector of claim 9 , wherein the micro-duct is configured to prevent a plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with a circular outer periphery portioned connector that includes a circular outer periphery portion that extends in a direction traverse to a longitudinal direction of the circular outer periphery portioned connector from being passed through the micro-duct.

11. The connector of claim 9 , further comprising a retaining member having a front end portion that is configured to hold the ferrule holder portion and a rear end portion that is configured to receive one of the plurality of fiber optic cables.

12. The connector of claim 9 , further comprising a boot that is configured to be coupled with the retaining member.

13. The connector of claim 9 , further comprising an outer housing that is configured to be coupled with the ferrule holder portion.

14. The connector of claim 13 , wherein the outer housing is configured to be coupled with the ferrule holder portion after the ferrule holder portion is passed through the micro-duct.

15. The connector of claim 9 , wherein the micro-duct has a diameter of about 3 mm to about 16 mm.

16. The connector of claim 9 , wherein the cap portion is configured so as to push the connector device and the plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the ferrule bolder portion through the micro-duct.

17. The connector of claim 9 , wherein the cap portion is configured so as to pull the connector device and the plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the ferrule holder portion through the micro-duct.

18. The connector of claim 9 , wherein the two flat portions that are spaced apart from one another about the periphery.

19. The connector of claim 9 , wherein a third curved portion connects the two second curved portions.

20. A multifiber connector for passing pre-connectorized fiber optic cable through micro-duct comprising:

an engagement portion that is configured to hold a ferrule that is configured to terminate a fiber optic cable;

a receiving portion that is configured to receive the engagement portion therein;

wherein the engagement portion includes a base portion having a length in a longitudinal direction of the engagement portion and an outer periphery portion that extends in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction of the engagement portion;

wherein the outer portion includes two flat portions having first ends that are nearest to one another along the outer periphery of the base portion connected one another by a first curved portion and wherein two second curved portions extend from second ends of the two flat portions that are furthest from one another along the outer periphery; and

wherein the receiving portion is configured to receive the engagement portion therein and is shaped to minimize an outer periphery portion of the receiving portion in the transverse direction such that a plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the connector are configured to pass through a micro-duct that is configured to be installed in a duct having a diameter of at least 25 mm.

21. The connector of claim 20 , wherein the micro-duct is configured to prevent a plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with a circular outer periphery portioned connector that includes a circular outer periphery portion that extends in a direction traverse to a longitudinal direction of the circular outer periphery portioned connector from being passed through the micro-duct.

22. The connector of claim 20 , further comprising a retaining member having a front end portion that is configured to hold one of the plurality of engagement portions and a rear end portion configured to receive one of the plurality of fiber optic cables.

23. The connector of claim 20 , further comprising a strain relief member that is configured to be coupled with the retaining member.

24. The connector of claim 20 , further comprising an outer housing portion that is configured to be coupled with one of the plurality of engagement portions.

25. The connector of claim 24 , wherein the outer housing portion is configured to be coupled with the one of the plurality of engagement portions after the one of the plurality of engagement portions is passed through the micro-duct.

26. The connector of claim 20 , wherein the micro-duct has a diameter of about 3 mm to about 16 mm.

27. The connector of claim 20 , wherein the receiving portion is configured so as to push the connector and the plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the plurality of ferrule holders through the micro-duct.

28. The connector of claim 20 , wherein the receiving portion is configured so as to pull the connector device and the plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the plurality of ferrule holders through the micro-duct.

29. The connector of claim 20 , wherein the two flat portions that are spaced apart from one another about the periphery.

30. The connector of claim 20 , wherein a third curved portion connects the two second curved portions.

31. The connector of claim 20 , wherein the receiving member is configured to receive the plurality of engagement structures so as to minimize an outer periphery of the receiving portion in the transverse direction and configured the connector and a plurality of fiber optic cables that are pre-connectorized with the plurality of engagement structures of the connector through the micro-duct.

32. The connector of claim 20 , wherein the outer periphery of each of the plurality of engagement portions includes two flat portions spaced apart from one another about the outer periphery.

33. The connector of claim 32 , wherein first ends of the two flat portions that are nearest to one another along the outer periphery of the base portion are connected to one another by a first curved portion.

34. The connector of claim 20 , wherein second ends of the two flat portions that are furthest from one another along the outer periphery of the base portion are connected to one another by a second curved portion.
