Abstract

An engine can utilize a combustor to combust fuel to drive the engine. A fuel nozzle assembly can supply fuel to the combustor for combustion or ignition of the fuel. The fuel nozzle assembly can include a swirler and a fuel nozzle to supply a mixture of fuel and air for combustion. The fuel nozzle can include both a primary and secondary fuel passage, and an additional air passage to provide for greater flame control, fuel provision, or local fuel and air mixing prior to combustion.

Claims (34)

1. A turbine engine comprising:

a compressor section, combustor section, and turbine section in serial flow arrangement, with the combustor section including a fuel nozzle assembly comprising:

an annular swirler;

a fuel nozzle circumscribed by the annular swirler, the fuel nozzle comprising:

an outer wall defining a longitudinal axis and defining an inner air passage;

a middle fuel passage extending through the outer wall and circumscribing the inner air passage;

an outer fuel passage extending through the outer wall and circumscribing the middle fuel passage; and

an orifice extending through the outer wall from the middle fuel passage to the inner air passage or from the outer fuel passage to the annular swirler.

2. The turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the orifice exhausts from the outer fuel passage to the annular swirler.

3. The turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the orifice is arranged at a non-zero angle relative to the longitudinal axis.

4. The turbine engine of claim 3 , wherein the orifice is angled in an aft direction as defined by the non-zero angle.

5. The turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the orifice extends from the middle fuel passage to the inner air passage.

6. The turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the orifice is one of a set of orifices in circumferential arrangement about the longitudinal axis.

7. The turbine engine of claim 6 , wherein the outer fuel passage is arranged as a set of multiple discrete outer fuel passages.

8. The turbine engine of claim 7 , wherein each passage of the set of multiple discrete outer fuel passages couples to one orifice of the set of orifices.

9. The turbine engine of claim 1 , further comprising an interior swirler provided within the inner air passage.

10. The turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the middle fuel passage exhausts at an aft end of the fuel nozzle, and wherein the orifice exhausts from the middle fuel passage to the inner air passage forward of the aft end.

11. The turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the inner air passage, the middle fuel passage, and the outer fuel passage each terminate at an aft end of the fuel nozzle, and wherein the inner air passage, the middle fuel passage, and the outer fuel passage each have a constant cross-sectional area extending forward from each aft end.

12. The turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the outer wall is cylindrical.

13. The turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein a cross-sectional area of the middle fuel passage and the outer fuel passage is constant.

14. A fuel nozzle assembly comprising:

an annular swirler; and

a fuel nozzle extending through the annular swirler, the fuel nozzle comprising:

an outer wall defining a longitudinal axis;

an inner air passage defined interior of the outer wall;

a middle fuel passage extending through the outer wall and circumscribing the inner air passage;

an outer fuel passage extending through the outer wall and circumscribing the inner air passage and the middle fuel passage; and

an orifice extending from the middle fuel passage to the inner air passage or from the outer fuel passage to the annular swirler.

15. The fuel nozzle assembly of claim 14 , wherein the orifice is arranged at a non-zero angle relative to the longitudinal axis.

16. The fuel nozzle assembly of claim 14 , wherein the orifice exhausts from the middle fuel passage to the inner air passage.

17. The fuel nozzle assembly of claim 14 , wherein the orifice is one of a set of orifices arranged circumferentially about the longitudinal axis.

18. The fuel nozzle assembly of claim 14 , wherein the orifice exhausts from the outer fuel passage to the annular swirler.

19. The fuel nozzle assembly of claim 14 , wherein the outer wall is cylindrical.

20. The fuel nozzle assembly of claim 14 , wherein a cross-sectional area of the middle fuel passage and the outer fuel passage is constant.
