Abstract

Certain aspects relate to systems with robotically controllable field generators and applications thereof. A robotic medical system may include a robotic arm coupled to an electromagnetic (EM) field generator configured to generate an EM field, and the first robotic arm may be configured to move the EM field generator. The medical system may also include a medical instrument configured for insertion into a patient. The medical instrument may comprise an EM sensor and one or more processors. The processors may: determine a position of the EM sensor within the EM field; and adjust a position of the EM field generator by commanding movement of the first robotic arm based on the determined position of the EM sensor.

Claims (40)

1. A robotic medical system, comprising:

a first robotic arm coupled to an electromagnetic (EM) field generator configured to generate an EM field, the first robotic arm configured to move the EM field generator;

a medical instrument configured for insertion into a patient, the medical instrument comprising an EM sensor; and

one or more processors configured to:

determine that the EM sensor is positioned at a boundary of a predetermined region within the EM field; and

adjust a position of the EM field generator by commanding movement of the first robotic arm responsive to determining that the EM sensor is positioned at the boundary of the predetermined region.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the position of the EM field generator causes the EM sensor to be positioned at a predetermined position within the EM field.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the predetermined position within the EM field comprises a center of a working volume of the EM field.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the position of the EM field generator based on the determined position of the EM sensor comprises adjusting the position of the EM field generator such that the EM sensor is positioned within the predetermined region of the EM field.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine an orientation of the EM sensor within the EM field; and

adjust at least one of an orientation and the position of the EM field generator by commanding movement of the first robotic arm based on the determined orientation of the EM sensor.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to adjust the at least one of the orientation and position of the EM field generator based on the determined orientation of the EM sensor to increase an accuracy for determining a position of the EM sensor within the EM field.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

during movement of the medical instrument, command movement of the first robotic arm to move the EM field generator such that the EM sensor is positioned within a working volume of the EM field.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the movement of the EM field generator via the first robotic arm tracks the movement of the medical instrument.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to command movement of the first robotic arm to move the EM field generator during movement of the medical instrument such that the EM sensor is positioned within the predetermined region of the EM field.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to command movement of the first robotic arm to move the EM field generator during movement of the medical instrument such that the EM sensor is positioned at a predetermined position within the predetermined region of the EM field.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the predetermined position comprises a center of the predetermined region of the EM field.

12. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a second robotic arm, wherein:

the medical instrument is coupled to the second robotic arm; and

the one or more processors are configured to command movement of the medical instrument with the second robotic arm.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the first robotic arm and the second arm are coupled to one of a cart and a patient platform, wherein the patient platform is configured to support a patient during a medical procedure.

14. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a third robotic arm coupled to one of the cart and the patient platform.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to:

determine a position of the EM sensor within the EM field relative to an EM coordinate frame associated with EM field generator;

determine a registration between the EM coordinate frame and a robotic coordinate frame associated with the first robotic arm based on determining a position of the EM field generator within the robotic coordinate frame; and

based on the registration, determine the position of the EM sensor in the robotic coordinate frame.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to determine the position of the EM field generator within the robotic coordinate frame based on kinematics of the first robotic arm.

17. A robotic medical method, comprising:

determining a position of an electromagnetic (EM) sensor of a medical instrument within a predetermined region of an EM field generated by an EM field generator coupled to a first robotic arm;

moving the medical instrument to a boundary of the predetermined region; and

in response to the medical instrument moving to the boundary of the predetermined region, commanding the first robotic arm to move the EM field generator such that the EM sensor remains positioned within the predetermined region of the EM field generator.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein:

the medical instrument is coupled to a second robotic arm, and

moving the medical instrument comprises moving the medical instrument with the second robotic arm.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein moving the instrument with the second robotic arm comprises articulating the second robotic arm.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein:

the medical instrument is coupled to an instrument drive mechanism, and

moving the medical instrument with the second robotic arm comprises actuating the medical instrument with the instrument drive mechanism.
