Abstract

A medical electrical lead and methods of implanting medical electrical leads in lumens. Leads in accordance with the invention employ preformed biases to stabilize the lead within a lumen or lumen and to provide feedback to lead implanters.

Claims (24)

1. A medical electrical lead for implanting in a patient, comprising:

a lead body comprising:

a proximal portion configured to be connected to an implantable medical device comprising an electrical signal generator, and

a distal portion, the distal portion having a spiral shape with a plurality of isodiametric loops, wherein the plurality of isodiametric loops have a diameter based on a blood vessel size and implant location, the plurality of isodiametric loops being configured to stabilize the distal portion when implanted in at least one blood vessel of the patient, wherein the at least one blood vessel of the patient comprises at least one of a brachiocephalic vein, a superior vena cava, or a subclavian vein, the blood vessel size is a size of the at least one blood vessel, and the implant location is a portion of the at least one blood vessel proximate to a phrenic nerve; and

a plurality of electrodes disposed on the distal portion and electrically connected to the electrical signal generator via the lead body.

2. The medical electrical lead of claim 1 , comprising a guide wire or stylet configured to be removably installed within the lead body and to be removed from the lead body after the medical electrical lead is implanted in the at least one blood vessel.

3. The medical electrical lead of claim 2 , wherein the lead body is configured to:

straighten when the guide wire or stylet is removably installed, and

resume the spiral shape when the guide wire or stylet is removed.

4. The medical electrical lead of claim 1 , wherein the lead body comprises polyurethane.

5. The medical electrical lead of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of isodiametric loops comprises:

at least a first loop and a second loop, wherein the first loop and the second loop turn in a same direction.

6. The medical electrical lead of claim 5 ,

wherein at least one first electrode of the plurality of electrodes is disposed on the first loop, and

wherein at least one second electrode of the plurality of electrodes is disposed on the second loop.

7. The medical electrical lead of claim 6 , wherein none of the plurality of electrodes is disposed on a transition between the first loop and the second loop.

8. The medical electrical lead of claim 5 , wherein at least one electrode of the plurality of electrodes is disposed at a distal end of the distal portion.

9. The medical electrical lead of claim 1 , wherein the lead body is configured to pass through a subclavian vein to enter a brachiocephalic vein or a superior vena cava.

10. The medical electrical lead of claim 1 , wherein the implantable medical device is configured to receive sensed signals from the patient's body.

11. The medical electrical lead of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion comprises one or more fixation elements.

12. The medical electrical lead of claim 11 , wherein the one or more fixation elements comprise one or more of a barb, a hook, a bump, a depression, or a ridge.

13. The medical electrical lead of claim 11 , wherein the one or more fixation elements comprise one or more of a material coating or a chemical coating.

14. The medical electrical lead of claim 1 , wherein the phrenic nerve is a right phrenic nerve.

15. The medical electrical lead of claim 1 , wherein the phrenic nerve is a left phrenic nerve.
