Abstract

A sole structure for an article of footwear includes a cushioning element having a top surface, a bottom surface formed on an opposite side of the cushioning element from the top surface, a ramp surface spaced apart from the bottom surface in a heel region of the cushioning element, a heel pocket extending through the cushioning element from the top surface to the ramp surface, and a plurality of pillars extending from the ramp surface and surrounding the pocket. The sole structure additionally includes a plurality of cushioning particles disposed within the pocket, an outsole attached to the cushioning element and enclosing a first end of the pocket, and an upper barrier layer attached to the top surface of the cushioning element and covering a second end of the pocket.

Claims (26)

1. A sole structure for an article of footwear, the sole structure comprising:

a cushioning element having a top surface and a bottom surface formed on an opposite side of the cushioning element from the top surface, the cushioning element including at least one rib that defines at least a portion of a ground-engaging surface;

an outsole attached to the cushioning element, forming a first portion of a sidewall of the sole structure, and including a first surface opposing the cushioning element and a second surface formed on an opposite side of the outsole than the first surface and further defining the ground-engaging surface, the first surface including a first portion spaced apart from the bottom surface of the cushioning element to define a heel pocket;

a plurality of cushioning particles disposed within the heel pocket and being visible through the first portion of the sidewall, the plurality of cushioning particles being isolated within the heel pocket by the at least one rib; and

a plurality of pillars extending from the bottom surface of the cushioning element in a direction toward the ground-engaging surface, the plurality of pillars being arranged along an arcuate path in a heel region of the sole structure.

2. The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein each of the pillars extends from a first end attached to the bottom surface to a terminal end opposing the first surface of the outsole.

3. The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein a cross-sectional area of at least one of the pillars tapers in a direction away from the bottom surface.

4. The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein the pillars are spaced inwardly from an outer periphery of the cushioning element.

5. The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the pillars is arcuate.

6. The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein the cushioning element further includes a midfoot pocket and at least one forefoot pocket.

7. The sole structure of claim 6 , wherein the midfoot pocket and the forefoot pocket each includes cushioning particles disposed therein.

8. The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein the outsole is formed from one of a translucent material and a transparent material.

9. An article of footwear incorporating the sole structure of claim 1 .

10. A sole structure for an article of footwear, the sole structure comprising:

a cushioning element having a top surface and a bottom surface formed on an opposite side of the cushioning element from the top surface, the cushioning element including at least one rib that defines at least a portion of a ground-engaging surface;

an outsole attached to the cushioning element and including a first surface opposing the cushioning element and a second surface formed on an opposite side of the outsole than the first surface and further defining the ground-engaging surface, the first surface including a first portion spaced apart from the bottom surface of the cushioning element to define a heel pocket;

a plurality of cushioning particles disposed within the heel pocket and being visible through the outsole at the ground-engaging surface, the plurality of cushioning particles being isolated within the heel pocket by the at least one rib; and

a plurality of pillars extending from the bottom surface of the cushioning element in a direction toward the ground-engaging surface, the plurality of pillars being arranged along an arcuate path in a heel region of the sole structure.

11. The sole structure of claim 10 , wherein each of the pillars extends from a first end attached to the bottom surface to a terminal end opposing the first surface of the outsole.

12. The sole structure of claim 10 , wherein a cross-sectional area of at least one of the pillars tapers in a direction away from the bottom surface.

13. The sole structure of claim 10 , wherein the pillars are spaced inwardly from an outer periphery of the cushioning element.

14. The sole structure of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the pillars is arcuate.

15. The sole structure of claim 10 , wherein the cushioning element further includes a midfoot pocket and at least one forefoot pocket.

16. The sole structure of claim 15 , wherein the midfoot pocket and the forefoot pocket each includes cushioning particles disposed therein.

17. The sole structure of claim 10 , wherein the outsole is formed from one of a translucent material and a transparent material.

18. An article of footwear incorporating the sole structure of claim 10 .
