Abstract

Systems and methods which employ one or more reels that expand and contract responsive to the occurrence of (or lack thereof) different events.

Claims (36)

1. A gaming system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

for a first play of a game, cause a display, by a display device, of symbols at a plurality of symbol display positions associated with a plurality of reels, and

responsive to, in association with the first play of the game, an occurrence of a first reel expansion event associated with a first reel of the plurality of reels:

for a second, subsequent play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels and a first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, and

responsive to, for the second, subsequent play of the game, no occurrence of the same first reel expansion event associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, for a third play of the game that occurs after the second play of the game and without displaying at least one of the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the second, subsequent play of the game, another occurrence of the same first reel expansion event associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, for the third play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels, the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, and a second quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 2 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the second, subsequent play of the game, an occurrence of a second reel expansion event associated with a second reel of the plurality of reels, for the second, subsequent play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels, the second quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, and a first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the second reel of the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 2 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the second, subsequent play of the game, the other occurrence of the same first reel expansion event associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, for the second, subsequent play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels, the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, and the second quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels.

5. The gaming system of claim 2 , wherein the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels is different from the second quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the first play of the game, the occurrence of the same first reel expansion event associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, for the first play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels and the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the second, subsequent play of the game, an occurrence of a second reel expansion event associated with a second reel of the plurality of reels, for the second, subsequent play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels, and a second quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the second reel of the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the first play of the game, the occurrence of the same first reel expansion event associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, for a plurality of subsequent plays of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels and the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels.

9. A gaming system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

for a first play of a game, cause a display, by a display device, of symbols at a plurality of symbol display positions associated with a plurality of reels, and

responsive to, in association with the first play of the game, an occurrence of a reel expansion event associated with a first reel of the plurality of reels:

for a second, subsequent play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels and a first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, and

responsive to, for the second, subsequent play of the game, no occurrence of the same reel expansion event associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, for a third play of the game that occurs after the second play of the game and without displaying at least one of the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels and a second quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, the second quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel being less than the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel.

The gaming system of claim 9 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the second, subsequent play of the game, another occurrence of the same reel expansion event associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, for the third play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels, the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, and a third quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the second, subsequent play of the game, an occurrence of the same reel expansion event associated with a second reel of the plurality of reels, for the second, subsequent play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels, the second quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, and a third quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the second reel of the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the second, subsequent play of the game, the other occurrence of the same reel expansion event associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, for the second, subsequent play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels, the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, and the third quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels.

13. The gaming system of claim 10 , wherein the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels is different from the second quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 9 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the first play of the game, the occurrence of the same reel expansion event associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, for the first play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels and the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 9 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the second, subsequent play of the game, an occurrence of the same reel expansion event associated with a second reel of the plurality of reels, for the second, subsequent play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels, and a third quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the second reel of the plurality of reels.

The gaming system of claim 9 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to, in association with the first play of the game, the occurrence of the same reel expansion event associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels, for a plurality of subsequent plays of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels and the first quantity of additional symbol display positions associated with the first reel of the plurality of reels.

17. A gaming system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

for each play of a game associated with an occurrence of a reel expansion event, cause a display, by a display device, of at least one additional symbol display position associated with a plurality of reels, and

for each play of the game associated with no occurrence of the same reel expansion event when the at least one additional symbol display position associated with the plurality of reels was displayed in a prior play of the game, cause a display, by the display device, of a removal of at least one and less than all of any additional symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels.

18. The gaming system of claim 17 , wherein different occurrences of the same reel expansion event are associated with different quantities of additional symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels.

19. The gaming system of claim 17 , wherein different non-occurrences of the same reel expansion event are associated with different quantities of additional symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels being removed.

20. The gaming system of claim 17 , wherein different occurrences of the same reel expansion event are associated with displaying additional symbol display positions associated with different reels.
