Abstract

Claims (23)

1. A surgical access port system adapted for performing surgical procedures at a natural orifice comprising:

a tubular body having a longitudinal axis, a proximal end and a distal end,

a retaining sleeve that comprises a longitudinal axis, a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen,

wherein the tubular body is disposed within the lumen of the retaining sleeve and is configured to move along the longitudinal axis of the retaining sleeve, and

wherein the tubular body comprises a ratcheting mechanism that is configured to move the tubular body along the longitudinal axis of the retaining sleeve in a unidirectional manner, and

one or more arms connected to the distal end of the retaining sleeve, wherein the one or more arms are movable from a closed position to an open position as the distal end of the tubular body engages the one or more arms.

2. The surgical access port of claim 1 , wherein the ratcheting mechanism comprises a plurality of teeth and corresponding pawls, wherein the ratcheting mechanism is located on an external surface of the tubular body and an internal surface of the retaining sleeve.

3. The surgical access port of claim 1 , wherein the ratcheting mechanism is configured to provide the ability for the tubular body to resist backwards movement within the retaining sleeve.

4. The surgical access port of claim 1 , wherein the unidirectional movement of the tubular body is not performed within the retaining sleeve when the ratcheting mechanism is released.

5. The surgical access port system of claim 4 , wherein the release of the ratcheting mechanism is performed by having a user depress both sides of the tubular body.

6. The surgical access port system of claim 1 further comprising an outer ring that is configured to be disposed proximate the natural orifice of the patient, and wherein the proximal end of the tubular body is coupled to the outer ring.

7. The surgical access port system of claim 6 further comprising a removable gel cap, wherein the removable gel cap comprises a gel pad and a cap ring coupled with the gel pad, and wherein the cap ring is engageable with the outer ring.

8. The surgical access port system of claim 6 further comprising two or more suture points each configured to receive one or more sutures to prevent dislodging of the surgical access port system from the natural orifice once placed.

9. The surgical access port system of claim 8 , wherein the two or more suture points are positioned diametrically opposed relative to a circular profile of the outer ring.

10. The surgical access port system of claim 1 further comprising a funnel segment at the proximal end of the tubular body.

11. The surgical access port system of claim 1 further comprising a bolster disposed at the proximal end of the tubular body, the bolster configured to externally occlude the natural orifice.

The surgical access port system of claim 1 , further comprising an obturator, wherein the tubular body is configured to receive the obturator, wherein the obturator has a proximal bearing surface sized and configured to bear against an inner surface of the tubular body to expand an opening associated with the natural orifice of the patient for passage of the tubular body through the natural orifice.

13. The surgical access port system of claim 12 , wherein the obturator comprises a handle configured for selective twisting or rotation of the obturator with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tubular body during insertion into the opening of the patient.

14. The surgical access port system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more arms are connected to the distal end of the retaining sleeve via articulating hinges.

The surgical access port system of claim 14 further comprising an articulating lead, wherein the articulating lead is arranged near the articulating hinges, and wherein the articulating lead is configured to control a transition from the closed position to the open position of the one or more arms at an incremental rate.

The surgical access port system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more arms are arranged in parallel with the longitudinal axis of the tubular body while in the closed position to facilitate insertion and removal of the system from the natural orifice of the patient, and wherein the tubular body disengages from the one or more arms in order to allow the one or more arms to be folded thereby transitioning from the open position back to the closed position.

17. The surgical access port system of claim 1 , wherein the tubular body further comprises a lip at the proximal end, wherein the lip is configured to prevent the proximal end of the retaining sleeve from entering an opening of the patient.

18. The surgical access port system of claim 17 , wherein the lip further is configured to provide a holding point during an advancement of the tubular body through the retaining sleeve.
