Protective case for electronic device with housing
A protective case for housing a protected device such as audio earbuds. In some examples the case may include a water-resistant seal to prevent damage to the protected device, an impact-resistant outer housing and/or an impact absorbing inner housing portion. The case may include upper and lower portions hingedly or pivotally coupled to one another. In example applications wherein the protected device includes a hinged container, eccentric or offset hinge axes of the case and the protected device effect a cam or fulcrum action that assists in opening and/or raising the protected device container for ease of access to the protected device when the case is opened.
1. A case for protecting an electronic device with a housing, the housing comprising a first housing portion hingedly connected to a second housing portion, the case being reconfigurable between an open configuration and a closed configuration and comprising:
a first inner shell portion configured for receiving the first housing portion;
a first outer shell portion configured for receiving the first inner shell portion;
a second inner shell portion configured for receiving the second housing portion; and
a second outer shell portion hingedly secured to the first outer shell portion;
wherein the first inner shell portion is at a first distance from the first outer shell portion in the open configuration and a second distance in the closed configuration, wherein the first distance is greater than the second distance; and
wherein the second housing portion is slidably engaged in the second inner shell portion.
2. The case of claim 1 , wherein the second housing portion is at a third distance from the second outer shell portion in the open configuration and a fourth distance in the closed configuration, wherein the third distance is greater than the fourth distance.
3. The case of claim 1 , wherein the first housing portion remains at a substantially same distance from the first inner shell portion in both open and closed configurations.
4. The case of claim 1 , wherein the second inner shell portion remains at a substantially same distance from the second outer shell portion in both open and closed configurations.
5. The case of claim 4 , wherein the second housing portion is offset from the second inner shell portion in the open configuration.

The case of claim 1 , further comprising a sealing engagement mechanism between at least one of the first shell portions and at least one of the second shell portions, wherein the sealing engagement mechanism comprises a rib positioned at least partially around the lower rim of the at least one of the first shell portions, and wherein contact between the rib and the at least one of the second shell portions creates a water-resistant seal.

The case of claim 1 , further comprising a sealing engagement mechanism between at least one of the first shell portions and the second outer shell portion, wherein the sealing engagement mechanism comprises a rib positioned at least partially around the lower rim of the at least one of the first shell portions, and wherein contact between the rib and the second outer shell creates a water-resistant seal.
8. The case of claim 1 , further comprising a locking mechanism for releasably locking the case in the closed configuration.
9. The case of claim 1 , further comprising a deformable ring or gasket between the first and second shell portions.
