Abstract

Presented herein is a plurality of arrangements of cold plates having interior chambers. The interior chamber includes a plurality of fins with a first fin zone and a second fin zone. The cold plate further includes a first fluid inlet and a first fluid outlet. The cold plates can be connected such that each cold plate allows unidirectional flow or counter flow configurations. Unidirectional flow or counter flow cold plates can be arranged in rows and in combination of rows.

Claims (51)

1. A method of cooling pluggable modules received in a cage, the method comprising:

directing a fluid to an inlet of a first plate of a cold plate arrangement;

flowing the fluid through a first plurality of fin groups of the first plate, wherein a first fin-density of each fin group of the first plurality of fin groups corresponds to a first heat source;

flowing the fluid through a second plurality of fin groups of a second plate of the cold plate arrangement, wherein a second fin-density of each fin group of the second plurality of fin groups corresponds to a second heat source that differs from the first heat source;

flowing the fluid through an outlet of the second plate of the cold plate arrangement;

directing an additional fluid to an additional inlet of the first plate of the cold plate arrangement;

flowing the additional fluid through a third plurality of fin groups of the first plate;

flowing the additional fluid through a fourth plurality of fin groups of the second plate; and

flowing the additional fluid through an additional outlet of the second plate.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second plate is fluidly coupled to the first plate.

3. The method of claim 2 ,

wherein the third plurality of fin groups defines a first low fin-density zone of the cold plate arrangement and

the fourth plurality of fin groups defines a second low fin-density zone of the cold plate arrangement.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first plurality of fin groups defines a first high fin-density zone of the cold plate arrangement, and the second plurality of fin groups defines a second high fin-density zone of the cold plate arrangement.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first fin-density of the first plurality of fin groups is configured to cool a first heat source budget, and the second fin-density of the second plurality of fin groups is configured to cool a second heat source budget that differs from the first heat source budget.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transferring heat from each of the first heat source and the second heat source to the first plurality of fin groups and the second plurality of fin groups, respectively; and

transferring the heat from the first plurality of fin groups and the second plurality of fin groups to the fluid.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first fin-density and the second fin-density each represent a fin thickness, a distance between fins, a fin quantity, or any combination thereof.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

flowing the fluid from the first plate to an enclosure transfer line; and

flowing the fluid from the enclosure transfer line to the second plate.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising separating the fluid and the additional fluid via a fluid barrier.

10. A method of cooling pluggable modules received in a cage, the method comprising:

directing a first flow of fluid to a first inlet of an interior chamber of a cold plate;

flowing the first flow of fluid through a first plurality of fin groups, wherein a first fin-density of each fin group of the first plurality of fin groups is set based on a corresponding first heat source;

directing the first flow of fluid through a first outlet of the interior chamber;

directing a second flow of fluid to a second inlet of the interior chamber;

flowing the second flow of fluid through a second plurality of fin groups, wherein a second fin-density of each fin group of the second plurality of fin groups is set based on a corresponding second heat source;

directing the second flow of fluid through a second outlet of the interior chamber; and

separating, via a fluid barrier, the first flow of fluid from the second flow of fluid through an entirety of the cold plate.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising directing the first flow of fluid from the first outlet to a first inlet of a second cold plate.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising flowing the first flow of fluid through a third plurality of fin groups having a third fin-density.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the third fin-density is equal to the first fin-density or the second fin-density.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first fin-density is greater than the second fin-density.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein directing the second flow of fluid to the second inlet of the interior chamber comprises:

guiding the first flow of fluid from the first outlet through a return channel fluidly coupled to the second inlet of the interior chamber to generate the second flow of fluid through the interior chamber.

16. A method of cooling pluggable modules received in a cage, the method comprising:

directing a first flow of fluid to a first inlet of a cold plate arrangement;

flowing the first flow of fluid through a first plurality of fin groups, wherein the first plurality of fin groups is disposed within a first cold plate of the cold plate arrangement, and a first fin-density of each fin group of the first plurality of fin groups corresponds to a first heat source;

flowing the first flow of fluid through a second plurality of fin groups, wherein the second plurality of fin groups is disposed in a second cold plate of the cold plate arrangement, the second cold plate being fluidly coupled to the first cold plate, and a second fin-density of each fin group of the second plurality of fin groups corresponds to a second heat source that differs from the first heat source;

flowing the first flow of fluid through a first outlet of the cold plate arrangement;

directing a second flow of fluid to a second inlet of the cold plate arrangement;

directing the second flow of fluid through a third plurality of fin groups, wherein the third plurality of fin groups is disposed in the first cold plate and defines a first low fin-density zone of the cold plate arrangement;

directing the second flow of fluid through a fourth plurality of fin groups, wherein the fourth plurality of fin groups is disposed in the second cold plate and defines a second low fin-density zone of the cold plate arrangement; and

flowing the second flow of fluid through a second outlet of the cold plate arrangement,

wherein the first inlet and the second inlet are disposed at the first cold plate, and the first outlet and the second outlet are disposed at the second cold plate.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first plurality of fin groups defines a first high fin-density zone of the cold plate arrangement, and the second plurality of fin groups defines a second high fin-density zone of the cold plate arrangement.
