Abstract

A system including an instrument adapted to be manually supported and moved by a user. The instrument having a hand-held portion, a drive mechanism movably coupled to the hand-held portion, and a plurality of actuators operatively coupled to the drive mechanism for moving the drive mechanism in at least two degrees of freedom relative to the hand-held portion. The instrument also includes a tracking device for tracking the instrument and a working portion removably coupled to the drive mechanism by a coupling assembly. The system further comprises a navigation system for determining a position of the working portion and a bone to be cut during the medical procedure and a control system in communication with the actuators and configured to control the actuators to actively position the working portion such that the working portion is substantially maintained on a plane.

Claims (42)

1. A system for treating tissue during a medical procedure, the system comprising:

an instrument adapted to be manually supported and moved by a user, the instrument including:

a hand-held portion in shape of pistol grip;

a trigger disposed on the hand-held portion;

a drive mechanism movably coupled to the hand-held portion, a plurality of actuators operatively coupled to the drive mechanism for moving the drive mechanism in at least two degrees of freedom relative to the hand-held portion;

a first tracking device built into the instrument;

a working portion;

at least one adjustment mechanism disposed between the actuators and the drive mechanism for transmitting movement from the actuators to the drive mechanism, the adjustment mechanism including a link and a lead screw; and

a coupling assembly for releasably holding the working portion to the drive mechanism and configured to move with the working portion in the at least two degrees of freedom relative to the hand-held portion;

a navigation system for determining a position of the working portion and a bone to be cut during the medical procedure; and

a control system in communication with the actuators and configured to control the actuators to actively position the working portion such that the working portion is substantially maintained on a plane.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tracking device further comprises a plurality of optical markers in the form of light emitting diodes (LEDs), the optical markers configured to transmit light to a camera of the navigation system.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tracking device further comprises a plurality of optical markers in the form of light reflectors, the optical markers configured to reflect light transmitted by a camera of the navigation system.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjustment mechanism is moved in translation by the actuators.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjustment mechanism includes a pitch adjustment mechanism that sets a pitch of the working portion.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the drive mechanism includes a drive shaft coupled to the working portion for rotating the working portion about a cutting axis.

7. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a casing supporting the drive mechanism and movable by at least one of the actuators in pitch and yaw relative to the hand-held portion.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of actuators operatively coupled to the drive mechanism are configured to move the drive mechanism in two degrees of freedom relative to the hand-held portion.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the coupling assembly comprises a collet assembly rotatably coupling the drive shaft to the working portion so that the working portion rotates about the cutting axis upon rotation of the drive shaft.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein one of the plurality of actuators comprises an axial actuator for translating the working portion along an axis; and

wherein the collet assembly is configured to release the working portion in response to actuation of the axial actuator beyond a predefined limit of actuation.

11. A system for treating tissue during a medical procedure, the system comprising:

an instrument adapted to be manually supported and moved by a user, the instrument including:

a hand-held portion including a trigger, the hand-held portion in the shape of a pistol grip;

a drive mechanism movably coupled to the hand-held portion, the drive mechanism comprising a drive motor including a drive shaft;

a plurality of actuators operatively coupled to the drive mechanism for moving the drive mechanism in at least two degrees of freedom relative to the hand-held portion;

a cutting accessory;

an adjustment mechanism disposed between the actuators and the cutting accessory for transmitting movement from the actuators to the cutting accessory, the adjustment mechanism including a link and a lead screw; and

an assembly for removably coupling the cutting accessory to the instrument, the assembly configured to provide a mechanical linkage between the drive shaft of the drive motor and the cutting accessory for rotating the cutting accessory about a cutting axis upon rotation of the drive shaft;

a navigation system for determining a position of the cutting accessory relative to a plane associated with a bone to be cut during the medical procedure; and

a control system in communication with the actuators and configured to control the actuators to actively position the drive mechanism such that the cutting accessory is maintained at the plane of the bone to be cut.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising an axial actuator for translating the cutting accessory along an axis.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the assembly is a collet assembly for rotatably coupling the drive shaft to the cutting accessory.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the collet assembly includes:

a sleeve; and

an inner member and a clamping member disposed within the sleeve;

wherein the inner member defines a bore for receiving the cutting accessory; and

wherein the inner member configured to selectively bias the clamping member into engagement with the cutting accessory.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the instrument is configured to correct for deviations in alignment of the cutting accessory during the medical procedure by changing a pitch of the cutting accessory.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the drive motor is fixed from translating along a translation axis relative to the hand-held portion; and

wherein the assembly provides a mechanical linkage between the drive motor and the cutting accessory such that the cutting accessory is actuatable by the drive motor.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the adjustment mechanism includes a pitch adjustment mechanism that sets a pitch of the cutting accessory.
