Abstract

A bracket for attaching a mullion to a frame includes a mullion-engaging portion that couples with the mullion, a frame-engaging portion that couples with a frame segment, a middle portion between the mullion-engaging portion and the frame-engaging portion, and a flange projecting from the middle portion. The flange couples with one end of the mullion such that air flow between an interior space of the mullion and the other side of the flange is inhibited.

Claims (57)

1. A bracket for attaching a mullion to a frame, comprising:

a barrier portion comprising a first side and a second side, opposite the first side;

a mullion-engaging portion extending from the first side, the mullion-engaging portion configured to couple with the mullion, the mullion-engaging portion comprising:

a rim;

a plurality of bosses coupled to the rim, each boss of the plurality of bosses configured to couple to one of a plurality of fasteners to couple the mullion-engaging portion to the frame; and

a web extending between the plurality of bosses and the rim; and

a frame-engaging portion extending from the second side, the frame-engaging portion configured to couple with the frame,

wherein the barrier portion is configured to inhibit air flow between an interior space of the mullion and space outside the mullion.

2. The bracket of claim 1 , wherein the mullion-engaging portion of the bracket is configured to receive a fastener passing through each of opposing lateral walls of the mullion to secure the mullion to the bracket, and wherein the mullion-engaging portion comprises at least one threaded hole configured to receive the fastener.

3. The bracket of claim 2 , wherein the mullion-engaging portion comprises an insert, wherein the insert is configured to receive the fastener.

4. The bracket of claim 1 , wherein the barrier portion is configured to at least partially fill the interior space of the mullion to form a barrier between the interior space and opposing sides of the bracket.

5. The bracket of claim 1 , wherein the barrier portion comprises a flange.

6. The bracket of claim 1 , wherein the barrier portion comprises a flange configured to contact an end of the mullion to cap the interior space of the mullion.

7. The bracket of claim 1 , wherein the mullion-engaging portion is configured to receive a fastener passing through each of opposing lateral walls of the mullion to secure the mullion to the bracket.

8. The bracket of claim 7 , wherein the mullion-engaging portion comprises a plurality of threaded inserts, each threaded insert of the plurality of threaded inserts configured to receive one of a plurality of fasteners configured to couple the mullion-engaging portion to the mullion.

9. The bracket of claim 1 , wherein the barrier portion, the mullion-engaging portion, and the frame-engaging portion comprise a polymer.

10. The bracket of claim 9 , wherein the barrier portion, the mullion-engaging portion, and the frame-engaging portion further comprise a metal sole inserted inside the polymer.

11. A method of connecting a mullion with a frame segment, comprising:

inserting a mullion-engaging portion of a mullion bracket into an interior space of the mullion such that the mullion-engaging portion is between opposing lateral walls of the mullion, such that a barrier portion of the mullion bracket coupled to the mullion-engaging portion contacts an end of the mullion, and such that air flow between the interior space of the mullion and space outside the mullion is inhibited by the barrier portion;

installing a fastener through each of the opposing lateral walls of the mullion and into the mullion-engaging portion of the mullion bracket to secure the mullion-engaging portion of the mullion bracket to the lateral walls of the mullion;

contacting a frame-engaging portion of the mullion bracket to the frame segment, the frame-engaging portion positioned on an opposite side of the mullion bracket from the mullion-engaging portion and separated from the mullion-engaging portion by the barrier portion; and

securing by the frame-engaging portion, the mullion bracket to the frame segment.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the barrier portion comprises a flange.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the barrier portion comprises a flange, the method further comprising contacting an end of the mullion with the flange to cap the interior space of the mullion.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein securing the mullion bracket to the frame segment comprises coupling the frame-engaging portion of the mullion bracket to the frame segment.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein coupling the frame-engaging portion of the mullion bracket to the frame segment comprises passing at least one fastener through the frame-engaging portion into the frame segment.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein passing the fastener through the frame-engaging portion into the frame segment comprises orienting the fastener substantially orthogonal to a front surface of the mullion bracket and a front surface of the frame segment.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein installing the fastener through each of the opposing lateral walls of the mullion and into the frame-engaging portion of the mullion bracket to secure the frame-engaging portion of the mullion bracket to the lateral walls of the mullion comprises orienting the fastener substantially orthogonal to side surfaces of the mullion and side surfaces of the mullion bracket.

18. A bracket for attaching a mullion to a frame, comprising:

a barrier portion comprising a first side and a second side, opposite the first side, the barrier portion configured to inhibit air flow between an interior space of the mullion and space outside the mullion;

a mullion-engaging portion extending from the first side, the mullion-engaging portion configured to couple with the mullion;

a frame-engaging portion extending from the second side, the frame-engaging portion configured to couple with the frame, the frame-engaging portion comprising

a rim;

a plurality of bosses coupled to the rim, each boss of the plurality of bosses configured to couple to one of a plurality of fasteners to couple the frame-engaging portion to the frame; and

a web extending between the plurality of bosses and the rim.

19. The bracket of claim 18 , wherein the mullion-engaging portion comprises:

a rim;

a plurality of bosses coupled to the rim, each boss of the plurality of bosses configured to couple to one of a plurality of fasteners to couple the mullion-engaging portion to the frame; and

a web extending between the plurality of bosses and the rim.

20. A refrigerated enclosure comprising:

a frame assembly comprising a top frame segment and a bottom frame segment;

a mullion comprising walls defining a mullion interior space; and

a pair of mullion brackets positioned at opposing ends of the mullion, the pair of mullion brackets coupling the mullion to the top frame segment and the bottom frame segment, each of the mullion brackets comprising:

a mullion-engaging portion positioned within the mullion interior space, the mullion-engaging portion comprising:

a rim;
