Abstract

Implantable occlusion devices that include one or more flanges extending from a tubular body are disclosed. The flange or flanges may assist in retention of the device within a vessel, cavity, appendage, etc. At least one flange on the occlusion device may include a concave surface proximate one end of a body. Because of the shape of the flange, e.g., its concavity, the occlusion device may resist dislocation due to e.g., the forces generated within the left atrial appendage during atrial fibrillation.

Claims (31)

1. A medical device for deployment in a body, wherein the device comprises:

a tubular body comprising a closed first end and a closed second end, the body defining a longitudinal axis extending between the first end and the second end, the body comprising a body width measured transverse to the longitudinal axis when the device is in a relaxed configuration; and

a single flange extending outwardly to a flange width at a flange peripheral edge, the flange comprising one or more linear surfaces when the device is in the relaxed configuration, wherein the body width proximate the flange is less than the flange width.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the flange extends around an entire periphery of the body.

3. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more linear surfaces form one or more convex surfaces.

4. The medical device of claim 3 , wherein the one or more convex surfaces form a parabolic convex surface.

5. The medical device of claim 3 , wherein the one or more convex surfaces form an annular ring.

6. The medical device of claim 3 , wherein the flange further comprises one or more curved surfaces.

7. The medical device of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the one or more convex surfaces faces away from the first end of the body.

8. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more linear surfaces form one or more concave surfaces.

9. The medical device of claim 8 , wherein the one or more concave surfaces form a parabolic concave surface.

10. The medical device of claim 8 , wherein the one or more concave surfaces form an annular ring.

11. The medical device of claim 8 , wherein the flange further comprises one or more curved surfaces.

12. The medical device of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the one or more concave surfaces faces toward the first end of the body.

13. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the flange is attached to the body.

14. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the flange peripheral edge is configured to be biased against an interior surface of an appendage.

15. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a plurality of strands treated to conform in shape to the relaxed configuration of the device.

16. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a plurality of said flanges.

17. The medical device of claim 16 , wherein the one or more linear surfaces of at least two of the plurality of said flanges form one or more concave surfaces.

18. The medical device of claim 16 , wherein the one or more linear surfaces of at least two of the plurality of said flanges form one or more convex surfaces.

19. A medical device for deployment in a body, wherein the device comprises:

a tubular body comprising a closed first end and a closed second end, the body defining a longitudinal axis extending between the first end and the second end, the body comprising a body width measured transverse to the longitudinal axis when the device is in a relaxed configuration; and

a flange extending outwardly to a flange width at a flange peripheral edge, the flange comprising one or more linear surfaces when the device is in the relaxed configuration,

wherein the body width proximate the flange is less than the flange width, and

wherein the second end of the body is concave towards the first end of the body.

20. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first end of the body is generally planar.

21. A medical device for deployment in a body, wherein the device comprises:

a tubular body comprising a closed first end and a closed second end, the body defining a longitudinal axis extending between the first end and the second end, the body comprising a body width measured transverse to the longitudinal axis when the device is in a relaxed configuration; and

a flange extending outwardly to a flange width at a flange peripheral edge, the flange comprising one or more linear surfaces when the device is in the relaxed configuration,

wherein the body width proximate the flange is less than the flange width, and

wherein the one or more linear surfaces form one or more convex surfaces or one or more concave surfaces, the one or more convex surfaces forming a parabolic convex surface or the one or more concave surfaces forming a parabolic concave surface.
